First Division - Day Eleven

Celta finally got back the goalscoring form that has eluded them all season in the league, beating Betis 5-1 after being a goal behind. Víctor Fernández decided to leave Benni McCarthy on the bench and give Turdó a start after he came on and scored last week in their UEFA cup match. Turdó took his opportunity, scoring twice as Celta recovered from a shaky start to end Betis's run of three wins in a row. It was Alfonso however who opened the scoring for the away side. The Madrid born striker, just recalled by Camacho to the national side, headed in Finidi's cross after a corner in the second minute of the game. By half time Celta were leading 3-1, the first goal being scored by Gustavo López afterPrats had blocked Mostovoi's free kick, the second by Turdó after good work by Karpin, and the third by Mostovoi himself with an individual effort. Turdó added the fourth in the second half, possibly in an offside position after Mostovoi put him through, and Karpin rounded of the rout, heading in Gustavo López's cross. A few minutes before the end Mazinho made his first reappearance since picking up a bone infection in his leg back in May, and he was given a standing ovation by fans as he came on for Celades. After the first goal Betis were not in the match, although it can't be said that they had overeaten before the game. Their manager has put them on a strict pre-match diet, as Denilson found to his cost when he had a bag of crisps taken away from him by the trainer at the airport.

Hector Cúper returned to Mallorca with his Valencia side to a rousing reception by the home team supporters who hadn't forgotten the manager who took them from obscurity to a European cup final. Both sides had played important European matches in midweek, with Mallorca playing on Thursday. Nevertheless Cúper named an unchanged side, with Adrian Ilie not yet fully fit returning to the bench together with Angloma. Mallorca manager Fernándo Vázquez had rested key players such as Olaizola and Siviero in Europe, but they returned to the side for this game, with Quinteros and Tristán preferred up front to Biagini. Engonga missed the game through injury. The only goal of the game came from Diego Tristán in the 50th minute, the young striker heading in Stankovic's precision cross. Valencia's volatile Italian defender Carboni was sent off later in the second half for a second yellow card. With all teams so close together on points, Mallorca jump from 16th place up to tenth. Valencia are now 18th, occupying one of the three relegation spots. At this stage of the season it doesn't matter that much, but success in the Champions League is costing them their normal high position in the Spanish league.
