Pre-season Fixtures 2001/2002

As usual, there are a host of pre-season matches and tournaments organised during the months of July and August. We will be publishing the details here as soon as each fixture is announced. Please bear in mind that these fixtures are provisional, and could be subject to change. We suggest you check with the club before making any commitment. Jul 2001 Mallorca pre-season
Pre-season in Austria. Matches against Traunstein (23 July, 4-4), Salzburg (26 July , 0-8), Ismaning (Germany, 28 July 1-5), then Arsenal (Kufstein, 30 July, 0-2, Fatih OG, Van Bronckhorst).
25 Jul 2001 Villarreal 2 - United Arab Emirates 1
Match played in Bulle, Switzerland. Abdulrahem gave the Arab side the side, but goals from Quique Martín in the first half and Craioveanu in the second turned the score around. Villarreal beat Galatasaray in Switzerland 4-3 on 28th and played in the Aosta tournament on 2nd August: Villarreal 1 (Jorge López) - Sporting Lisbon 0.
26-28 Jul 2001 Amsterdam Tournament
Ajax, Liverpool, AC Milan and Valencia. Results 26/7: Ajax 0 - Milan 1 (Rui Costa). Liverpool 1 (Litmanen) - Valencia 0. Results 28/7: Valencia 2 (De los Santos, Kily pen)- Milan 1 (Inzaghi); Ajax vs Liverpool. Valencia were the better side in both games, but couldn´t score against Liverpool. Two late goals gave them victory against Milan. Ajax won the tournament with 3-1 victory over Liverpool.
27 Jul 2001 Samaranch testimonial match
Lausanne vs Real Madrid, played in Switzerland during Real Madrid's warm up . Testimonial match for the retiring Olympic president Juan Antonio Samaranch. An early goal from Raúl and a late one from Guti gave Madrid a 1-2 victory over their rivals. Zidane played his first 45 minutes for his new club. Played Nyonnaise on 29th, winning 1-12; (Zidane, McManaman, Miñambres, Baljic (2), Congo (4), Rivera, Alvaro (pen), Munitis).
27 Jul 2001 Farense (Por) 2 - 0 Sevilla
Played in Vila Real, Portugal. Bad tempered match, with Olivera sent off in the first half, Farense's Pinhal in the second, and Javi Navarro taken off with a suspected broken arm. The assistant referee was punched in the tunnel by a Sevilla player. Played Ayamonte, Huelva (28th; 0-4) and Vitoria de Guimaraes, Portugal (29th; 0-0).
28 Jul 2001 Deportivo La Coruña pre-season
28.7. Racing Vilalbés (3rd division). Won 1 - 2. Second half goals from Pandiani and Iván Pérez gave them victory.
31.07. Lemos (3rd division). Won 0 - 3 . Pandiani, Tristán (pen), Makaay. Djalminha was sent off for elbowing an opponent.
02.08. Viveiro. Won 1-6. Tristán (3), Víctor, Changui, Iván Pérez.
04.08. Pontevedra. Drew 2-2. Came backfrom two goals down with goals from Duscher and Donato.
18.08. Betanzos. Won 0-4. Makaay, Valerón, Tristán (2).
31 Jul 2001 Genk 2 - 3 Valencia
Beat the Belgian side with goals from Carew, Mista and Ilie. Salva injured and didn't play.
Jul/Aug 2001 Espanyol on tour
Raon Letap (28/7; 0-5). AS Nancy (31/7; 2-4 - Aganzo, Palencia, Tamudo, Rotchen), RSC Charleroi (3/8; 1-1, Juvenal), Fulham (4/8 in Le Touquet; 1-2, Tamudo, Velamazán), then returned to Cataluña to beat Lleida on penalties (7/8: 2-2, Aganzo (2)).
Jul/Aug 2001 Barcelona pre-season
Pre-season in Switzerland. Matches against Chenois (28th July: 0-3, Saviola (2), Kluivert), Lucerne (29th July; 0-5, Kluivert (2), Cocu (2), Geovanni), Grasshopper (31st July, 2-4, Saviola (2), Geovanni, Rochemback), Sporting Lisbon (3rd Aug; 1-3, Luis Enrique, Overmars, Gerard).
Jul/Aug 2001 Real Sociedad pre-season
Tour of Turkey, Toshack's old hunting ground. Games against Fenerbahce (29/7; 0-0), Bursaspor (31/7; 3-2; Khokhlov, Jankauskas), Kocaelispor (3/8; 2-1, Demetradze).
Aug 2001 Alavés pre-season
Opening match at Pau (South West France) on 28th July (0-0), then play four friendlies in UK during first two weeks of August against Sheffield Wednesday (4/8; 1-0), Bolton (7/8; 0-2, Magno, Rubén Navarro), Bolton again behind closed doors (9/8; 3-2) and Fulham (11/8; 0-1, Rubén Navarro).
Aug 2001 Málaga pre-season
Pre-season in Holland, with a match against Zaanlandia (0-15) and NEC Nimega (0-1). Returned to play match against Córdoba, which they lost 1-0 in bad-tempered game. Sandro sent off for elbowing Soria.
Aug 2001 Valladolid pre-season
Financial difficulties mean they stay near to home. Matches against lower division teams, with visits to Béjar (28/7; 0-1), Cultural (2/8; 2-6), Zamora (5/8; 2-0), Sporting Gijon (9/8; 4-1), Burgos (12/8; 2-0), and then against Salamanca for Medina del Campo trophy (16/8; 0-0).
Aug 2001 Athletic Bilbao tour of England
Pre-season tour of England. WBA (1/8: 0 - 2; Etxeberria, Guerrero), Bolton (3/8: 0 - 1; Yeste), Middlesborough (5/8: 3 - 0), Blackpool (7/8: 2-2; Alkiza, Del Horno), and Newcastle (11/8: 0-1; Julen Guerrero).
Aug 2001 Zaragoza pre-season
Warmed up with 0-23 result against Benasque, (Peternac (8), Yordi (4), Camacho (4), Jamelli (3) etc). Pre-season in Holland and Belgium. Play five games, starting with SV Urk on 7th Aug (1-4, Juanele, Aguado, Peternac, Pablo), then Halastern (8/8; 0-7, Jamelli 3, Ferrón, Corona, Garitano, Galletti), Mechelen (Racing Malinas to French speakers) (10/8; 2-2, Yordi, Vellisca), Heerenveen (11/8; 1-1, Jamelli) and finally Zuidvogels (13/8; 0-6).
Aug 2001 Rayo Vallecano pre-season
Tour of Belgium. Bruges (4/8; 2-2, Luis Cembranos, Bolic), Mouscom (5/8; 0-2, Pablo Sanz, Peragón). then back to play at Sporting Gijon (11/8; 2-2, Lediakhov, Villa / Peragón, Cembranos).
1 Aug 2001 City of Alicante tournament
Real Madrid's first game in Spain since the signing of Zidane. Played in the Rico Pérez stadium in Alicante, just South of Benidorm. Real Madrid 1 (Guti) - Montpellier 0.
3 Aug 2001 Valencia presentation
Presented new squad and afterwards played a friendly match against Groningen from Holland. Won 5-0 with goals from Ilie (2), Vicente, Aimar and Alieu (Carew's new name).
3 Aug 2001 AEK Athens - Bolonia - Sevilla
Old outstanding debt as part of Tsartas transfer deal last season from Sevilla to AEK. Triangular tournament in Athens. AEK won both 45 matches, including 1-0 vs Sevilla. Bolonia and Sevilla drew 1-1 (Tomás pen).
4 Aug 2001 Al Ahly 1 - 0 Real Madrid
Were paid around €2 Mio to play against the Egyptian champions in Cairo. Was billed in Egypt as the match of the century, and crowd of around 100,000 turned out.. However Madrid were disappointing, and the home side won with a second half goal from Sunday.
4 Aug 2001 Celta 2 - 0 Las Palmas
The Quinocho memorial trophy started the pre-season for Celta. The game was played in Compostela as the Balaidos pitch was badly damaged in a recent pop concert. Celta won with second half goals from Edu and new signing Maurice.
8 Aug 2001 Olympiakos 4 - 3 Celta
Played against Greek side in El Pireo. New signing Boban scored a brilliant goal on his debut, and Gustavo López and Mostovoi got the others. Contreras scored an own goal though and Celta lost in the last minute.
8 Aug 2001 Málaga 1 - 1 Tenerife
Presentation of Málaga's new squad. Eventually played against newly promoted Tenerife rather than international opposition. Pier gave the visitors the lead and Edgar equalised in the last minute.
8 Aug 2001 Hércules 1 - 1 Villarreal
Hastily arranged game at the Rico Pérez stadium in Alicante to replace Villarreal's tournament in Italy. Palermo scored early on, but Villarreal could only draw in the end.
8 Aug 2001 Castellón 1 - 0 Valencia
Presentation of Castellón squad. Salva finally made his debut, but Valencia lost thanks to a goal from Salillas, Castellón's new signing.
9 Aug 2001 Córdoba - Sevilla - Ceuta
Triangular match in Córdoba, A game of three halves Brian, and all of them crap. All ended 0-0, with the only first division side Sevilla winning by penalty shoot out.
9 to 11 Aug 2001 Teresa Herrera trophy, La Coruña
Annual competition over 3 days.
9/8. Depor vs Uruguay's Peñarol. Depor won 2-1, with first half goals from Makaay and Pandiani.
10/8. Real Madrid vs Mexico's Cruz Azul. Match ended 1-1, with Raúl getting the equaliser after Figo missed a penalty and Hierro got sent off. Madrid won the penalty shoot out 3-1, with Casillas saving 3 penalties.
11/8. Final: Depor vs Real Madrid. Depor came from behind to win by 2-1. Figo got the first, with Makaay & Tristán scoring for Depor.
3rd place play off: Peñarol 1-2 Cruz Azul.
10 Aug 2001 Derby County 0 - 3 Barcelona
Played the premier league side on brief tour of England.Three goals in the first 15 minutes (Kluivert 2, Geovanni) sentenced the match.
10 to 12 Aug 2001 Ceramica trophy, Villarreal
Another summer competition, this time also over 3 days. Three neighbours played each other.
10/8: Villarreal 2-1 Castellón (Palermo, Víctor pen / De Bon),
11/8: Castellón 0-2 Valencia (Salva, Vicente),
12/8: Villarreal 0-1 Valencia (Nico). Valencia champions.
10 to 11 Aug 2001 Ramón de Carranza trophy, Cádiz
Long standing summer tournament, this year featuring home side Cádiz from 2B plus three first division sides.
10/8: Cádiz 0 - Málaga 1 (Cortijo og);
Betis 2 (Casas 2) - Celta 1 (Mostovoi).
11/8; Final: Málaga 1 (Litos) - Betis 6 (Benjamín 2, Juanito, Capi, Casas pen, Javi).
3rd place: Cádiz 0 - Celta 4 (Catanha 2, Boban, Navarro og)
10 Aug 2001 Real Sociedad 1 - 1 Feyenoord
Official presentation of John Toshack's new squad against Dutch first division side. Luiz Alberto opened the scoring in the first half, but Tomasson equalised for the visitors in the second.
11 Aug 2001 Southampton 3 - 4 Espanyol
Travelled to England to inaugurate the new St. Mary's stadium. Espanyol were 0-4 up by half time with goals by Posse, Aganzo, De Lucas and Soldevilla, but the Saints pulled three back in the scond half through Davies and Rosler (2).
11 Aug 2001 Salamanca 0 - 1 Atlético Madrid
Presentation of the new Salamanca squad against one of their main rivals for promotion this year. Diego Alonso headed the only goal in the first half.
12 Aug 2001 Blackburn 3 - 2 Barcelona
Played the newly promoted side on brief tour of England. First pre-season defeat for the Catalan side thanks to late Mark Hughes goal. Cocu and Xavi (pen) scored for Barça.
12 Aug 2001 Tenerife 3 - 1 Partizan Belgrade
Presentation of Tenerife squad. Only match scheduled to be played in Tenerife during the pre-season. Goals from Hugo Morales, Xisco and Acorán in match which also served as a testimonial to Toño.
12 Aug 2001 Racing Santander 0 - 2 Aston Villa
Presentation of Racing squad. Match postponed from earlier in the week due to Villa's participation in Intertoto cup. Villa won with two goals in the first 15 minutes from Pablo Angel. Staunton and Bodipo shown red cards.
13 Aug 2001 Everton 1 - 0 Espanyol
Carried on to Liverpool to play premiership opposition again. Espanyol had most of the possession but could not score. Joe Max Moore got the only goal in the first half.
13 Aug 2001 Betis 1 - 1 Mallorca
Betis presentation match. After 8 pre-season victories Betis were finally held to a draw. Luque opened the scoring with a backheel, but Juanito equalised late in the second half.
14 Aug 2001 Real Madrid 1 - 2 Inter Milan
Santiago Bernabeu trophy. Cúper returns to Spain for Real Madrid's own tournament. With Zidane, Figo and Roberto Carlos on international duty, Madrid lost the trophy for the first time in 7 years. Vieri scored in the first half, and although Hierro levelled from a penalty in the 80th minute, Adriano gave Inter victory in the last minute.
14 Aug 2001 Deportivo La Coruña 1 - 0 Udinese
Juan Acuña trophy in la Coruña. Depor won by a single first half goal scored by Diego Tristán. New signing Sergio made his debut for the side.
14 Aug 2001 Valencia 2 - 1 Peñarol
Played the Uruguayan champions in the trofeo naranja. First half goals from Pellegrino and Mista gave Valencia victory in their own "Orange trophy" tournament. Cedres pulled one back in the second half against a Valencia side missing many of their stars.
14 Aug 2001 Sevilla presentation match
Finally agreed to play Italian side Torino, newly promoted to Serie A. Match ended 0-0. Sevilla also played at Jaén the day after in the Olive trophy with their second string players. They lost 3-1
15 Aug 2001 Rayo Vallecano 1 - 1 Atlético Madrid
After touring Belgium, Rayo returned to Vallecas for their squad presentation against city rivals Atlético. New signing Arteaga opened the scoring for Rayo just after the break, but Fernando Torres equalised shortly before the end.
15 Aug 2001 Osasuna 1 - 4 Real Sociedad
Friendly match between neighbours. Osasuna have Real to thank for staying up last season after they won away in the last game. Real won this one on merit though, their first preseason win in 7 games. Goals by Llorente, De Paula, Tayfun and Aranburu, with Gancedo scoring for the home side.
15 Aug 2001 Gimnastica Tarragona 2 - 0 Atlético Portuguesa
Presentation of newly promoted second division A side Nástic on the Mediterranean coast. Goals from Pinilla and Herrero.
16 Aug 2001 Málaga 1 - 0 Betis
Friendly match against the newly promoted Andalucian rivals at the Rosaleda stadium. Málaga got their revenge for the 6-1 thrashing in the Carranza tournament. Zárate got the only goal in the opening minutes.
16 Aug 2001 Athletic Bilbao 2 - 0 Peruggia
"Homeage al socio" (literally tribute to the members) match which is played every pre-season. Goals from Urzaiz and Ezquerro as Athletic showed promising form under new manager Heynckes.
16 Aug 2001 Alavés 2 - 1 Logroñes
Friendly against local rivals who were newly promoted back to second division B. Match abandoned when Mané took his remaining players in protest after referee Martínez Tomillo sent off four of his men, Jordi Cruyff, Téllez, Karmona and Turiel. Goals by Iván Alonso and Magno for Alavés and Jordi (not Cruyff) for Logroñes.
16 Aug 2001 Elche 2 - 2 Villarreal
Festa d'Elx trophy between neighbours. Villarreal won on penalties. Craioveanu and Xavi Gracia got Villarreal's goals in the second half after Benja and Nino had given the home side a two goal lead by half time.
17 Aug 2001 Gamper tournament, Barcelona
FC Barcelona in-house trophy. Rivals were Italian club Parma. Barça won 3-2. Saviola and Christanval scored in the first half and substitute Alfonso gave them a three goal lead in what may be his last game at the club. However two defensive errors let Parma back in the game towards the end, with goals from Di Vaio and Cannavarro. Saviola dedicated his goal to his late father, who died two weeks ago.
17 Aug 2001 Numancia 1 - 2 Rayo Vallecano
Trofeo Caja Duero. A big crowd, even though Numancia relegated last season. Goals from Glaucio and Roy for Rayo, and Alberto in between for the home side.
17 to 18 Aug 2001 Colombino trophy, Huelva
Once again Recreativo hosted this tournament, the 37th time the competition has been played.
17/8: Tenerife 2 (Xisco, Martí) - Osasuna 1 (Gancedo pen)
Recreativo 1 (Soriano) - Celta 1 (Catanha), Celta win 4-2 on penalties.
18/8: Final: Celta 3 (Maurice, G López, Jesuli) - Tenerife 1 (Pier)
18 Aug 2001 Málaga 1 - 2 Sevilla
Ciudad de la Línea trophy, played in the town on the border with Gibraltar. Alfaro and Olivera gave Sevilla the lead in the first half, with Zárate pulling one back after the break.
18 Aug 2001 Espanyol presentation match
Cuitat de Barcelona trophy at the Montjuic stadium. Espanyol 3-0 Olympiakos. Goals from Rotchen and Tamudo in the first half and Munteanu in the last minute. Mora saved a penalty in the second half.
18 Aug 2001 Valladolid 3 - 2 Peruggia
City of Valladolid trophy at home against Italian club ended Valladolid's pre-season preparation.Ricchetti gave the home side victory near the end after Luis García and Fernando (pen) had scored earlier on.
18 Aug 2001 Burgos 1 - 2 Real Sociedad
Real trying out against newly promoted 2A team. Isailovic gave the home side the lead, but Khokhlov and Demetradze turned it round in the second half. Xavi Alonso broke a toe and will be out for two months.
19 Aug 2001 Udinese 3 - 0 Villarreal
Inter Milan game postponed so played at Udine. Three goals in a five minute period in the first half finished off the East coast side.
21 Aug 2001 Celta 0 - 0 Sporting Lisbon
Ciudad de Vigo trophy. Presentation of squad the day before. Boban was the star, but the game ended goal-less and Sporting won on penalties.
28 Aug 2001 Pontevedra 1 - 1 Celta
City of Pontevedra trophy in Gallicia. Benni McCarthy saved the day in his last match, scoring a late equaliser and then the winning penalty in the shoot out.
29 Aug 2001 Lleida 1 - 3 Villarreal
Friendly against Catalan team, recently relegated to 2B. Lleida took the lead through Barbarín, but goals from Palermo and Gracia in the first half and a 35 metre shot from Galca near the end turned the score around.
29 Aug 2001 Xerez 1 - 1 Málaga
Match played in the Nuevo Mirador stadium, Algeciras. Xerez took the lead with a Viqueira penalty but Zárate equalised.
30 Aug 2001 Cartagonova 1 - 5 Real Madrid
Game played in Cartagena on South East coast of Spain against second division B side. Chance for non-regular players to get a game. Goals from Munitis (2), Geremi (2) and Congo. Artigas got one back for the home side.
30 Aug 2001 Zaragoza 5 - 0 Twente
Carlos Lapetra trophy. Late friendly after league has started. Parma pulled out so played Dutch cup winners instead. Chainho and Komljenovic made their debuts. Boring first half but introduction of Juanele for Jordi at half time made the difference. Five goals after the break from Juanele (2), Chainho, Ferrón and Aragón.
30 Aug 2001 Numancia 1 - 3 Osasuna
Local friendly to try out non-regular players. Kick off at unusual time of 11:30. Osasuna won with a Palacios hat-trick. Parri scored for the home side.
30 Aug 2001 Getafe vs Rayo Vallecano
Local Madrid friendly overshadowed by the killing of Getafe player Sebas, accidentally shot by a policeman in the early hours of Saturday morning after a fight broke out on a beach. Game ended 0-2 to Rayo.
31 Aug 2001 Triangular tournament, Sevilla
A game of three halves played between Sevilla, Betis and Athletic Bilbao at the Olympic stadium in Sevilla. Betis won the tournament thanks to a 1-0 victory over Bilbao, with a goal from new boy Joao Tomas. Sevilla and Bilbao drew 0-0, as did Betis and Sevilla in the last game, played in the early hours of the morning.
