Zaragoza, Alavés and Espanyol all entered the competition proper in September. Rayo Vallecano were drawn out of the hat as one of the 'fair-play' teams and played one qualifying round beforehand. Celta had won through in the Intertoto cup competition to take part in the UEFA competition.
