Pre-season Fixtures 2003/2004

As usual there was an intensive programme of pre-season matches starting early July and going on to the end of August, when the league season started again. We set out below the most important games involving first division clubs. NB. Games completed in red, pending in blue, late changes highlighted in bold. (24.09.03)

6 and 12 Jul Racing v Györi
Intertoto cup second round. Racing are first Spanish club to play in the new season. Legs home and away against Hungarian side. First leg: Racing 1 - Györi 0. Second leg: Györi 2 - Racing 1. Racing win on away goals rule. See separate section for report.
19 and 26 Jul Intertoto third round
Villarreal enter at this stage, together with Racing Santander. Villarreal's opponents will be Italian side Brescia, Racing play Slovan Liberec.
First leg results: Racing 0 - 1 Slovan; Villarreal 2 - 0 Bescia.
Second leg results: Slovan 2 - 1 Racing; Brescia 1 - 1 Villarreal.

27 July - 4 Aug Barcelona in USA
27/07 (Foxborough, Boston): Barça 2 (Saviola 2, 1 Pen) - Juventus 2 (Di Vaio, Miccoli). Juventus came back with two late goals but Barça won 6-5 on penalties. Ronaldinho made debut in 2nd half.
30/07, (Fedex field, Washington DC): Barça 2 (Quaresma, Ronaldinho) - AC Milan 0. A good game from the new players, with Quaresma named MVP;
03/08, (Lincoln Field, Philadelphia): Barça 1 (Kluivert) - Man Utd 3 (Forlan 2, Van Nistelrooy). Kluivert headed the first from Ronaldinho's cross, but Man U came back to win. Rijkaard's first defeat.
27 July Málaga in Poland and Austria
Took part in pre-season tournament with hosts Lech Posnan, Munich 1860 and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Beat Lech 1-2 in 50 min semi-final (Koke, Geijo) and then drew 0-0 with Maccabi in final, losing 5-4 on penalties.
Moved on to Austria for 9 days, with matches in Schruns against Bregenz (2/8: W 0-1 (Koke)) and Stuttgart (4/8: W 1-3 (Duda, Luque, Gavilán)).
27 Jul - 3 Aug Celta pre-season in Holland
Spending some time in Holland before Champions League ties. Play four games:
27/7: vs Telstar: W 0-2 (Catanha, Milosevic - pen) Cavallero, Juanfran and Cáceres sent off in punch up in 2nd half;
30/07: vs Emmen; W 0-5 (Milosevic, Jesuli, Edu, Catanha, Sergio). Bus driver arrested for speeding.
02/08: vs Feyenoord; W 0-1 (Edu). A better performance this time.
03/08: vs Groningen; W 1-3 (Gustavo López, Jandro, Catanha). The referee called two "time-outs" during the game!
27 Jul to 6 Aug Osasuna in Mexico
Javier Aguirre takes his side back to his old country.
27/07: Pachuca L 1 - 0
31/07: Cruz Azul W 2 - 3 (Puñal pen, Pinheiro, Aloisi).
03/08: Pumas UNAM D 1-1 (Morales).
06/08: Monarcas Morelia D 1-1 (Valdo).
A good warm up tour for the Navarrans, who return to play four games against 1st and 2nd division opposition in Spain.
27 July - 09 Aug Zaragoza pre-season
Training in Oosterbeek, Holland, from where they will play friendlies against Dutch clubs.
31/07: De Treffers, W: 0 - 4 (Galletti, Ponzio, Yordi, Milito).
2/8: Twente, W 1-3 (Galletti, David Villa, Espadas (Pen)).
4/8: Heusden, W 1-2 (Milito, García Granero).
6/8: Woerden, W 0-5 (Bilic, Drulic, Miguel García, Corona, Generlo).
8/8: NAC Breda, W 0-1 (Alvaro).
A successful tour, with Milito proving to be their star player.
30 Jul and 6 Aug Intertoto semi-final
Villarreal are the only Spanish side to reach this stage. Their opponents are FC Brno, first leg in Czech Republic (D: 1-1) and second leg at home (W: 2-0). Villarreal to play Heerenveen in final over two legs. See separate section for reports.
30 Jul Deportivo 0 - Porto 2
Juan Acuña trophy against Portuguese side. Goals from McCarthy (ex Celta) and Jankauskas (ex Real Sociedad) gave visitors the win. Makaay saw the game out in the stands.
1-10 Aug Mallorca pre-season in England
First warm up match for the Islanders, a visit to Ashton Gate in England against Bristol City. W 2-6 (Novo 2, Campano 2, Eto'o, Toni González).
Then on to Derby County (03/08), L 3-1 (Eto'o). Derby leading 3-0 at half time.
Bolton (06/08), D 0-0. Debut by Bruggink.
Birmingham City (09/08), D 0-0. Second score-less draw in a row.
Fulham (10/08), L 2-1 (Eto'o). Novo and Ibagaza left out of side. Early Eto'ogoal cancelled out.
2 Aug Racing Ferrol 1 - Deportivo 4
Depor were once again invited to the "Concepción Arenal Trophy" at Ferrol. Racing scored first through Trigo, but after that Valerón starred, scoring the equaliser and setting up Víctor for a second. Tristán got a third before the break, and Scaloni made it four near the end.
2 - 10 Aug Real Madrid in Asia
Real Madrid touring Asia this summer. Plans have changed somwhat and the program is now as follows:
24/07: Leave Spain to travel to Kunming, China. 20,000 fans watched a practise match.
02/08: All star "Dragon Team", Beijing. W 0-4 (Figo, Morientes (2), Portillo). Beckham debut. Figo scored from Raúl pass on stroke of half time. Madrid added three late on with stars already on bench.
05/08: FC Tokyo, Japan. W: 0-3 (Beckham, Solari, Ronaldo). Beckham scored first goal for club from free kick and was man of the match. Ronaldo came on in the second half and got a beauty near the end.
08/08: Hong Kong all star team, Hong Kong. W: 2-4 (Figo (Pen), Ronaldo (2), Raúl). All goals came in first half, starting with penalty on R. Carlos.
10/08: Thailand national side, Bangkok. W 1-2 (Portillo, Morientes). Players were looking tired after a gruelling schedule of matches and other activities. McManaman, Munitis and Julio César didn't play a minute in the whole tour.
2-10 Aug Athletic Bilbao pre-season
UK tour called off and visit Holland instead. Games as follows:
02/08: Den Haag; W 2-7 (Tiko (2), Luis Prieto, Yeste, Arriaga, Iraola (Pen), Javi González). Four goals from free kicks.
06/08: Volendam, W 1-3 (Yeste, Ezquerro, Iraola (Pen)). Won the game in a rainy second half.
08/08: AZ67 Alkmaar. L 2-1 (Urzaiz). Threw away lead in the fog.
3-5 Aug Valencia pre-season
Valencia started their pre-season training in Switzerland, ending with two games.
3/8. Chenois. 0-10 (Sánchez 2, Xisco 2, Baraja, Vicente 2, Salva, Aimar, Rufete. A mismatch against Swiss 2nd division side.
5/8: Saint Gallen: W 0-1 (Pellegrino). A more difficult game.
4-6 Aug Teresa Herrera trophy, La Coruña
Once again all-star line up for one of the most prestigious summer tournaments. Earlier this year, as Depor playing CL qualifier.
4/8: Deportivo 2 - 2 América de Mexico. América won on penalties;
5/8: Nacional 2 - 2 América de Mexico.
6/8: Deportivo 3 (Pandiani, Valerón, Amavisca) - Nacional de Montevideo 0. Pandiani took over Makaay's nº 7 shirt and opened scoring.
Depor champions of 58th edition of the tournament.
6-8 Aug Atlético Madrid in Mexico
Movistar tournament in Monterrey goes ahead in the end after doubts about fees.
06/08: Rayados Monterrey. W 0-3 (Colsa, Musampa, F Torres). Good win against Mexican champions.
07/08: Roma. D 1-1 (Nikolaidis). Hard game, Contra injured. Samuel and Candela sent off for Romans.
7 Aug Celta 2 - Olympiakos 2
Memorial Quinocho trophy, ninth edition. Celta's goals from Edu and an own goal. Celta won on penalties.
8 Aug Racing Santander 2 - Sporting Gijon 0
Game played in La Vigona stadium in Luarca. Racing won with goals from Benayoun and Jonathan.
8 Aug Zamora 1 - Valladolid 1
Pre-season, but not very friendly. Fernando Vázquez fought with opposing manager over which balls they should use! Oscar Sánchez equalised for Valladolid in the first half.
8-10 Aug Colombino trophy, Huelva
Recreativo host another of the big summer competitions, the 39th time the tournament has taken place. A tinge of sadness due to their relegation and cup final defeat, but a star line up. Games:
08/08: Recre 2 (Bermejo, Arteaga) - Panathinaikos 1 (Basinas). Four players sent off by Paradas Romero, including Viqueira and Toedtli.
09/08: Málaga 2 (Miguel Angel, Luque (Pen)) - Sevilla 0. Rubinos sent off Darío Silva against his old club and also manager Caparrós.
10/08: 3/4 play off: Sevilla 1 (Darío Silva) - Panathinaikos 0. Darío made up for sending off in last match with a goal. Notario saved a late penalty.
Final: Recre 1 Toedtli (Pen)) - Málaga 1 (Edgar) . Both goals in the second half. Recre won 2-0 on penalties after Luque saved the first three spot kicks.

8-12 Aug Barcelona in UK
Brief tour of UK after trip to USA.
08/08. Leicester City. W 0-1 (Saviola). Lineker guest of honour in home town. Cocu sent off min 20, but Saviola goal gave Barça a win.
10/08. Man City. L 2-1 (Saviola). Inauguration of new stadium. Anelka gave City the lead, and although Saviola equalised, Sinclair headed the winner in the second half.
12/8: Derry City. W 0-5 (Márquez, Andersson, Gerard, Saviola, Ronaldinho). Match dedicated to peace. Barça more than a match for the Irish side.
9 Aug Liverpool 0 - Valencia 2
Friendly match in England after pre-season in Switzerland. A great win, with goals from Vicente in the first half and Xisco after the break.
9 Aug Compostela 1 - Deportivo 4
Last game for Depor before CL qualifier. Comfortable victory, with goals from Amavisca, Sergio, Diego Tristán and Pablo Amo. Duscher and Fabiano sent off for brawling.
9-12 Aug Espanyol in Portugal
After unbeaten pre-season against lower division sides in Perelada, near Girona, go on to play in Portugal.
9/8: Os Beleneneses, L 2-1 (Tamudo (Pen)). Lost lead after Bastia and Oscar sent off by partial referee.
12/8: Beira Mar. A disappointing result. First start for Jordi Cruyff with new club.
12 and 26 Aug Intertoto final
Villarreal reached one of the three finals for the second year running, and played Heerenveen. First leg in Holland on 12th August, W 1-2. Return leg in Spain on 26th, D 0-0. See separate section for details.
12 Aug Sevilla presentation match
Sevilla played OFK Belgrade in their presentation match this year. Also playing 9 friendlies against lower division sides. They won this one 3-1 with goals from Hornos, Reyes (Pen) and Gallardo.
12 Aug Rayo Vallecano 2 - Valladolid 1
Rayo won the first ever Aranjuez trophy. Their goals from Bolo and Geni, with Oscar getting one back in between.
12-26 Aug Alavés pre-season
Play the following: 12/8: Logroñes (Laguardia: D 1-1 (Kiko)), 15/8: Numancia (H: W 1-0 (Kiko)), 20/8: Burgos (A: L 1-0), 23/8: Zalla (A) W: 1-5, 26/8: Sevilla (H - presentation match): L 1-2 (Navarro / Njegus, Antonio López).
12/13 and 26/27 Aug Champions' League third qualifying round
Deportivo La Coruña and Celta Vigo will both have to survive one round before the league stage starts. See separate section for details. First legs: 12/8: Celta 3 - Slavia Prague 0; 13/8: Rosenborg 0 - Deportivo 0.
13 Aug Betis 1 - Boca Juniors 1
Friendly match at home against South American champions. 15,000 fans turned up for the team presentation. Boca came over with many reserves, but went in front through Colautti. Maldonado equalised later on.
13 Aug Valencia 1 - Perugia 0
Valencia's presentation match. The crowd gave a hard time to club president Jaime Ortí for not signing any top names. Only goal came when Di Loreto turned Albiol's effort into his own net. Albelda and Obodo sent off for brawling in the first half.
13-20 Aug Real Sociedad pre-season
The last of the first division sides to play pre-season friendlies. Games as follows:
13/8: Udinese (A), D 0-0. Debut of Lee Chun Soo as Karpin injured. The Italians won 3-1 in penalty shoot out.
16/8: Al Alhy (H), D 1 (Kovacevic) -1 (Riad). Real won 4-3 on penalties. Kovacevic putthe Basques ahead, but the Egyptians made it all square later in the second half.
18/8: Osasuna (A), L 1 (Moha) - 0. Match played at Hondarribia. Both managers put out reserve sides. Osasuna won with goal in second half.
20/8: Malmöe (H) W 2 (De Paula, Lee Chun Soo) -1 (Ijeh). Lee Chun Soo made the first goal and scored the second in Real's victory. Kovacevic and Nihat away on international duty.
23/8: Inter Milan (A-Catania) L 1-0. Inter left out many first choice players, but won with goal from Van der Meyde.
14-16 Aug Ramón Carranza trophy, Cádiz
Bigger event now that Cádiz promoted to second division A. Cádiz, Málaga, Betis and Atlético Madrid will take part.
14/8: Cádiz 0 - Málaga 1 (Gerardo). An injury time free kick took the visitors through to the final.
15/8: Betis 0 - Atlético Madrid 2 (Musampa, Javi Moreno). Great goal by Musampa just before half time and late strike from Moreno saw Atlético through.
16/8: 3/4 play-off: Cádiz 1 (Oli) - Betis 2 (Rivas, Tote). Betis came from behind to take 3rd place ahead of hosts.
16/8: Final: Atlético 0 - Málaga 0. Atlético won 4-2 on penalties, theighth time they have won the trophy.
16 Aug Elche 0 - Barcelona 0
Festa de Elx trophy. Friendly match against Barça. Game ended scoreless, Barça won 3-1 on penalties after Víctor saved 3 spot kicks.
16 Aug Celta 1 - Athletic Bilbao 2
Gemma Cuervo trophy, played in Ribadeo, Lugo (Gallicia). Bad state of pitch prevented any constructive football. Etxeberría and Ezquerro gave Athletic half time lead, youngster Oubiña pulled one back after the break.
16 Aug Osasuna 1 - Zaragoza 1
Friendly match between two first division sides. Both goals from second half penalties, Aloisi for the home side and then Soriano for the visitors.
17 Aug Valencia v Real Madrid
Trofeo Naranja - Valencia's annual tournament at the Mestalla stadium, the Orange Trophy. Beckham's debut in Spain. Valencia new boys Oliveira and Canobbio both hit the woodwork (as did Carew), but in the end it ended without goals and went to penalties. Real Madrid won the shoot out 6-5.
17 and 20 Aug Extremadura trophy, Almendralejo
17/8: Triangular tournament was to include Mallorca and Atlético, but the Madrid based side dropped out so Extremadura played a friendly against Mallorca. The visitors turned up with a weakened team and lost 2-0, thanks to two goals in a minute in the first half. Ibagaza was sent off after the break.
20/8: Tournament eventually took place with Recreativo and Sevilla three days later. A game of three halves, with scores as follows:
Recre 0 - Sevilla 0; Penalties - 7-6;
Extrtemadura 1 - Sevilla 1 (Kepa) - Penalties 5-4;
Extreamdura 0 - Recre 0 - Penalties 3-1.
Extremadura won on penalties.
18 Aug Sampdoria 2 - Racing Santander 1
Organizing friendlies now out of Intertoto. Lost this one thanks in part to a doubtful first half penalty. Pablo Casar got a late consolation goal.
18-21 Aug Ceramica trophy
Another traditional summer tournament which this year involves Villarreal plus Castellón and Uruguay's Peñarol.
18/8: Villarreal 1 (Calleja - pen) - Castellón 1 (Eloy - pen). Roger made his debut, but Villarreal were held by 2B side.
20/8: Castellón v Peñarol (at Castellón);
21/8: Villarreal 2 (Belletti, Roger) - Peñarol 1 (Begoechea). Villarreal won this year's trophy with two goals in the first half.
19 Aug Deportivo 0 - Atlético Madrid 1
Another friendly between two top sides. Promising start for Atlético, who won this one with a late goal from Javi Moreno. They are undefeated in six games. Really a match for trying out players though, with both sides changing almost all their sides at half time.
19 Aug Hércules 1 - Valencia 2
Presentation of Alicante based 2B club. Depleted Valencia side came from behind to win with goals from Canobbio and Jorge López.
19 Aug Valladolid 2 - Girondins 0
City of Valladolid trophy. First real test for Valladolid against Bordeaux. French side lined up with Riera and Celades in the team. Goals from Jesús (Pen) and Cardetti a minute either side of half time.
20 Aug Spain (not) in USA
Warm up game for Euro 2004 qualifiers. Due to play Mexico in the New Jersey Giants stadium. Match postponed as it was decided that the trip was too long at this time of the pre-season. Fixture will be played at a date later in the year. Spain had a training session in Madrid instead. Uncapped players Fernando Torres, Reyes, Pavón, Aranzubia and López Rekarte called up in 25 man squad. The "reds" beat the "whites" 2-0 with both goals from Etxeberría.
20-23 Aug Sabadell centenary tournament
Celebration of centenary in the Nova Creu Alta.
20/8: Sabadell v Terrassa. Sabadell won.
22/8: Barcelona B 1 (Arveloa og) - Real Madrid B 0.
23/8: 3/4 play off: Terrassa 1 (Quique Martín) - Real Madrid B 2 (Adrian, Riki).
23/8: Final: Sabadell 1 (Jordi Tarres) - Barcelona B 0.
20 Aug Málaga v Brescia
Costa del Sol trophy, played in Marbella against Italian side. Match ended without goals, and Brescia took the trophy after winning 2-3 on penalties.
20-23 Aug Osasuna pre-season
20/8: Eibar (A) L 1-0. Eibar presentation match, which the home side won with a goal from Arregui.
23/8: Numancia (A) L 1-0. Another "friendly" match, where Cruchaga and Octavio were both sent off in the last minute and Osasuna's Exposito got his nose broken. The only goal came from Fagiani late on.
21 Aug Ciutat de Barcelona trophy
Espanyol's annual presentation against Italian side Parma. Match brought forward so team can participate in Catalonia cup. Tamudo put the Catalans ahead, but Adriano equalised before half time. Parma won 2-4 on penalties.
21 Aug City of Vigo trophy
Celta presentation against Sevilla. Match ended 1-1 after Antoñito put the visitors ahead and Catanha equalised in the first half. Sevilla won 4-1 in the penalty shoot-out.
22 Aug Gamper tournament, FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona's annual tournament. Boca Juniors were the opponents. New management organized a big event, with pre-match activities. Match ended 1-1, with Tévez scoring for the Argentina side and Gerard equalising in the second half after Kluivert hit the post. Barça won 5-3 on penalties.
22 Aug Athletic Bilbao presentation
Homenaje al socio match. Opponents were Italian revelation side, Chievo. Athletic lost 1-2 though, with Etxeberría getting the only goal in the last minute after the Italians scored twice late on.
22 Aug Rayo 2 - Atlético Madrid 1
Teresa Rivero trophy between two Madrid based sides, although Atlético put out a team mainly made up of reserves. Javi Moreno gave the visitors the lead, but Idiakez equalised and Corino hit the winner from the penalty spot after the referee ruled that Hibic had fouled Crusat. Atlético's first defeat of the pre-season.
22 Aug Xerez 0 - Betis 0
Betis late substitutes for this match after Stuttgart pulled out. Palermo made his debut in the second half.
23 Aug Málaga 1 - Valencia 1
Friendly game in Málaga. The visitors took the lead in the second half with Oliveira's first goal for his new club, but Canabal equalised two minutes later.
23 Aug Poli Ejido 0 - Sevilla 1
Inauguration of reformed stadium was put back to this date, and opponents were Sevilla rather than Ajax due to tight programmme of Dutch side. The first division team won with a goal on the quarter hour mark from Luis Gil.
23 Aug Zaragoza 1 - Chievo 0
Zaragoza won the City of Zaragoza trophy with a goal from Yordi. The Italians had two players sent off with less than half an hour gone, and Ferrón followed them ten minutes from the end.
23 Aug Salamanca 1 - Valladolid 1
Salamanca presentation game. Second match between the two pre-season, after drawing 0-0 a few days ago. Caminero headed the visitors ahead after the break, Juanpa equalised later on.
24 Aug Córdoba 2 - Valencia 0
Córdoba's presentation game against a Valencia side full of reserves. Nico Olivera scored both goals in the second half against his old club.
24 Aug Elche 5 - Real Murcia 2
A bad result for Peiró's new side. Murcia scored two late penalties, converted by Luis García, but Elche won easily with goals from Zárate, Nino, Cuéllar, Moisés and Juan Carlos.
24 and 26 Aug Catalonia Cup
Played this tournament in summer rather than throughout the season. Barça and Espanyol qualify for semi-finals automatically. Results as follows:
24/8: Terrassa 1 (Rodri - pen)- Espanyol 2 (Tamudo, Maxi). A relatively easy win for the Periquitos against the champion of the last 2 years.
24/8: Girona 0 - Barcelona 4 (Luis Enrique, Cocu, Saviola (2)). Barça beat the hosts to set up an all first division final for the first time in 7 years.
26/8: Final in Minivili, Gerona; Barcelona 1 (Quaresma) - Epanyol 0. An individualist goal in the second half won it for a full stregth Barça side who were up against a team containing many reserve players. Ronaldinho was sent off at the end after being booked for taking a quick free kick.
24 and 27 Aug Spanish Supercup
Two leg fixture between league champions Real Madrid and cup winners Mallorca. First leg in Mallorca (Mallorca 2 - Real Madrid 1), return match in Madrid (Real Madrid 3 - Mallorca 0). Champions Real Madrid. See separate reports.
25 Aug Roma 2 - Betis 2
Friendly match in Italy. Betis led at half time with an Assunçao free kick and another goal from Capi after a mistake by Chivu. Roma scored twice though in the last three minutes of the game through Emerson and a dubious Cassano penalty to level the scores in the end.
25 Aug Atlético Madrid centenary trophy
Atlético celebrate their centenary this season. Boca Juniors were the opponents in the presentation match. Fernando Torres headed the only goal from Nano's cross midway through the second half. Boca's Villarreal was sent off near the end.
26/27 Aug Champions' League third qualifying round
Second leg games:
26/08: Depor (0) 1 - Rosenborg (0) 0;
27/08: Slavia Prague (0) 2 - Celta (3) 0.

23 Sep Santiago Bernabeu trophy
Postponed to this date due to Real Madrid's participation in the Supercup. Testimonial for honorary president Alfredo Di Stefano, who made his debut for the club exactly 50 years ago.
Real Madrid 3 (Portillo (2), Solari) - River Plate 0. Most of the stars played the first half, but Madrid ended with nine home-grown players on the park.
