Barcelona have the edge going in to the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup after coming from behind to beat Athletic Bilbao 1-2. Despite missing the injured Messi, Iniesta and Ibrahimovic, Guardiola's side started strongly, Iraizoz having to be at his best to tip an effort from Bojan on to the bar then turn a long shot from Alves away for a corner. But in the last quarter of an hour of the first half Athletic came back, Aitor Ocio shooting over the top and De Marcos almost catching Valdés out from the halfway line. And on the stroke of half time de Marcos opened the scoring after turning past Piqué and firing in a shot which Puyol deflected past his own keeper.
Early in the second half though Xavi levelled the scores after latching on to Pedro's square pass to shoot wide of Gorka, and ten minutes later Pedro got the second himself with an impressive shot from outside of the area. With one eye on Thursday night's Europa League qualifier, Joaquín Caparrós had already rested some of his key players, and he decided it was not worth risking the likes of Llorente any further. Alves could have extended the lead after that, Gorka again pushing his long shot on to the bar, but in the end everybody settled for the final result. Barcelona must be clear favourites for the return leg in a week's time, but Athletic have already overturned an adverse scoreline once this summer.
