Champions League, day three

Good results for all three Spanish sides in the Champions League this week. Real Madrid kicked off on Tuesday with a 2-0 victory over AC Milan, Cristiano Ronaldo and Özil getting the goals in a one minute period early in the first half to make it three wins out of three. And the following day Barcelona also won 2-0 against Copenhagen, Messi getting the first in the twentieth minute and adding a second in injury time to take his side to the top of their group. Meanwhile Valencia drew 1-1 at Rangers in Glasgow, with Edu putting the Scottish side ahead and then scoring in to his own net to level the scores, and although the Chés are currently third, wins in their two remaining home games should see them through to the knock-out stage. Barcelona 2 - Copenhagen 0

Barcelona beat Copenhagen 2-0 in their third group match to end the day at the top of the group. It was not a comfortable victory though, and it was only in the second minute of injury time that Messi wrapped things up with his second goal of the evening. The Danish side came in to the tie with two wins under their belts, and they put up a good defensive performance to deny Guardiola's team what was expected to be an easy win. Messi curled a shot wide of the keeper to open the scoring with just under twenty minutes gone, Villa and Alves hit the woodwork and Wiland had to make a couple of good saves from Villa and others. But N'Doye hit the bar and Santín wasted a couple of good chances before Messi finally put the fans' minds at rest at the end. (20.10.10)

Glasgow Rangers 1 - Valencia 1

Valencia picked up a valuable point against Rangers on Wednesday night to keep them on track for a place in the knock-out stage. The Scottish side came out strongly at first, with César having to save from Naismith and Miller, and Miller heading against the post. And with just over half an hour on the clock Edu headed the locals in to the lead, getting in front of the keeper to head a Weiss corner in to the net. Before the half time whistle Edu hit the post again and Miller failed to convert the follow up, but just a minute after the restart the Spaniards were level when Edu headed Tino Costa's free kick past his own keeper trying to clear. After that there were chances for both sides, but in the end they settled for a point apiece. (20.10.10)

Real Madrid 2 - AC Milan 0

Real Madrid are already close to a place in the knock-out round after beating AC Milan to make it three wins out of three. The game was won and lost in a period of just over a minute early in the first half, Cristiano Ronaldo finding a gap in Milan's defensive wall to beat Amelia with a free kick, and Özil making it two seconds later with a shot which Bonera could only head up over his own keeper. Casillas did well to keep out a Pirlo free kick and Seedorf fired an easy chance over the top, but Di María went close two or three times before the break, and Higuaín could have added to the lead had he been able to convert a couple of chances after the restart. A confident performance though, and Madrid have yet to let in a goal in the competition at the midway point of the league stage. (19.10.10)
