Spain 1 - Colombia 0

A late goal from David Silva gave Spain a single goal victory against Colombia in the Bernabeu stadium. With European qualifiers just around the corner and recent defeats against Argentina and Portugal fresh in the memory, coach Vicente De Bosque was not in the mood for experiments. The newly dubbed "marquis de Del Bosque" put out his strongest line-up, missing only the injured Puyol and the unwell Cesc Fábregas. Even so they were made to work hard by an at times physical opponent, and Casillas was called upon early on to save from Racing's Abel Aguilar. Soon afterwards David Villa hit the post and put the rebound wide, and Pedro saw an effort saved by Ospina. But otherwise the South Americans had the better chances, substitutes Cuadrado and Rodallega both going close after the restart. With four minutes to go though Jesús Navas crossed in from the right, and Silva nipped in to turn the ball past the keeper on the near post. A narrow win for Spain, but an important one to restore the confidence for the upcoming matches. (09.02.11)
