A bad start in this season's Europa League for defending champions Atlético Madrid, who were beaten 1-0 by Aris Salonika in their first group game. The Greek side had never been beaten at home in European competitions, and with Spaniards Javito and Coke in Héctor Cuper's line up they got off to a lively start. Javito went close early on, and Carlos Ruíz fired a long shot in the net only to be pulled up for controlling the ball with his hand.

Atlético's only reply was a couple of shots off target from Diego Forlán, and with Agüero injured Quique called on Diego Costa at half time. That improved things, although with an hour on the clock Javito controlled Ruíz's headed pass on his chest and fired a first time volley wide of De Gea.

Coke almost made it two a few minutes later with a shot against the foot of the post following a bad clearance by De Gea, but even so Atlético could have saved the draw had Costa not headed a Forlán cross over the bar when free in front of goal.
