Getafe were the only team from La Liga to win on day one, but they lost their second match to Young Boys to end the day level on points and goal difference with the Swiss side. Michel put out a much changed line-up, with three new signings in midfield. However they failed to impress, and the locals went ahead with only ten minutes on the clock when Sutter put Degen through for him to beat Ustari. Colunga, Mosquera and Miku all failed to convert chances before the break, and Miku shot wide a couple of times after the restart. But soon afterwards Sutter set up Degen again for a second, and Getafe gave up the fight. There was further bad news for Michel as well, Mario being carried off at the end with a ligament injury which could keep him out for up to six months, and the only positive point was the promising European debut of youngster Adrian Sardinero who came on for the last twenty minutes or so.
