Villarreal's disastrous Champions League campaign came to the worst possible end, a 0-2 defeat against Napoli leaving them without a single point from their six games at the group stage. Nilmar's return to the side inspired Marco Rubén, who fired an early shot against the outside of the post and then had a strike ruled out for offside. Zuñiga brought a good save out of Diego López early on and Hamsik fired a long shot just wide, but soon after the restart Hernán Pérez tested De Sanctis and then De Guzmán had a fairly good penalty claim turned down. With Manchester City beating Bayern Munich in the other group game though the Italians needed to win, and twenty minutes in to the second half Ilner put them ahead, beating Diego with a long shot. And any hope that Villarreal had of saving something from the match ended when Hamsik scrambled the ball over the line after the defence failed to clear a Lavazzi corner. Napoli go through, leaving City in the Europa League spot and Juan Carlos Garrido's side down and out. The worst ever record by a Spanish team in the Champions League, and they will be glad at least that it is finally all over.
