Messi, Messi, Messi, Messi, Messi... oh, and two from Tello on his Champions League debut as well! Barcelona rang up an historic 10-2 aggregate victory against Bayer Leverkusen to storm through to the quarter finals of the Champions League! Messi was forced to sit out the weekend game against Sporting after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season, but he came back with a vengeance in this tie. Already two down from the first leg, the German side seemed to give up right from the start, and after a couple of dangerous Xavi free kicks, Messi ran on to the midfielder's pass to lift a shot over Leno. Either side of half time Messi completed his hat-trick, the first with a shot wide of the keeper whilst surrounded by four defenders, and the second after pulling down a high pass from Fàbregas before lobbing an angled shot over the keeper with his "weaker" right foot. Guardiola brought on Tello, and within two minutes of coming on for his first ever appearance in the competition he had his name on the scoresheet after Fàbregas put him through. Messi got an almost embarrassing fourth following a quick passing move with Pedro, Leno pushing the ball back in to his path for him to roll a shot from a wide angle in off the far post. And a gob-smacked keeper could only deflect the ball back in to his own net after Tello fired in another shot from the left wing a few minutes later. Keita went close a couple of times after that, and with six minutes to go Messi picked up a square pass from the Mali midfielder to beat Leno once again for the seventh, the first time that anyone has scored five in a game since the Champions League began in 1992. With the game coming to an end Tello broke through again, but was prevented by scoring his hat-trick by the visiting keeper (Messi was in fact better placed to score his sixth, but who would begrudge the youngster the chance?). An amazing result, and although Bellarabi scored an injury time consolation for the visitors to sour Valdés's night, Barça demonstrated once again that they must be firm favorites to be the first side to win the title two years in a row.
