Latest transfers

Only three weeks to go before the start of the new season, and all indications are that the transfer market will take off if and when some big moves take place. Atlético Madrid and Villarreal already have cash already though after selling Kun Agüero and Santiago Cazorla to Middle East owned Manchester City and Málaga, although neither are likely to fork out too much until their European qualifiers have taken place. Atlético need a striker to replace Agüero, especially as Diego Costa has picked up a knee ligament injury which could keep him out for most of the season, but Villarreal are less likely to sell Rossi now that they have cashed in for Cazorla, and Atleti's bid for Espanyol's Osvaldo has been turned down as being well below the market value. Meanwhile Barcelona are still trying to sign Cesc Fàbregas, although Thiago's great form in the pre-season games is giving Guardiola second thoughts. If they do get him though, Arsenal could well spend some of the money on Valencia's Mata. Further down the food chain though the clubs under protection of the Spanish courts are struggling to put together their squads, with Rayo Vallecano waiting for a judge to allow them to lay off players and sign contracts with their cut price replacements, Mallorca forced to part with class acts such as Webó, Betis having their bid for Chico turned down by the legal administrator (although Mallorca's administrator allowed him to sign for them), and Racing Santander, seemingly abandoned by fraudster Ali Syed, having to resort to youth teams and players returning from loan to make up their "plantilla". The gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots" is widening! (31.07.11)
