Champions League, day 2

Barcelona cruised to the top of their group after an easy 0-5 win at BATE Borisov. Volodko turned the ball in to his own net early, and Pedro and Messi headed two more before the break. Messi added his second of the night soon after the restart, and Villa wrapped things up at the end. Valencia still have a lot of work to do though after they could only draw 1-1 at home to Chelsea. Even so they will be thankful for a point after Soldado converted a late penalty. Lampard had given the Premier League side the lead earlier in the second half. (28.09.11)

Real Madrid are already looking good for a place in the knock-out stage after they beat Ajax 3-0 on Tuesday night, their second win in a row in the competition. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring midway through the first half after a quick passing move, and Kaká and Benzema added two more either side of half time. Villarreal are in trouble though after they lost 2-0 at Napoli, and they are still to pick up a point after their opening two matches. The Italians scored both their goals in a two minute period around the quarter hour mark, Hamsik getting the first and Cavani converting a penalty for the second. (27.09.11)
