Just four and a half months after Spain beat Switzerland in the European under 21 final, the two sides met again at the group stage. And once again Luis Milla's side ran out winners, three goals in the first half ending any hopes the Swiss had of revenge. Muniain and Thiago both played in that final, and they were to get the first two goals, the Basque forward opening the scoring in the eighth minute after good work by Isco and Planas. It was the first goal the Swiss had let in this time around, but a few minutes later Thiago made it two from the penalty spot after Daprela had pulled back Montoya in the area. And with the first half coming to a close Marc Bartra headed the third following Thiago's corner to ensure maximum points for the youngsters from their first five games.
