For the second season in a row, Sevilla lost at the play-off stage of a European competition. This time though the defeat was in the Europa League, so their hopes of any European football this season have been totally dashed. 2-1 down from the first leg, the Andalusians needed to score, and Negredo hit the outside of the post as they pushed forward from the start. However they were struck a serious blow when Abdelleaue got on the end of Rausch's cross to beat Palop midway through the second half, an away goal for the German side which meant that Sevilla needed to score two even to force extra time. They did get one back before the break, Pogatetz putting through his own net trying to clear Perotti's cross. But despite the best efforts of Negredo and company they were unable to get that second goal, and they ended with ten men when a frustrated Medel got himself sent off with a straight red card for a hard tackle on an opponent.
