Atlético Madrid began the league stage of the competition with a 2-0 victory over Celtic, who had replaced Sion after the Swiss side were banned for fielding an illegible player against the Scottish side in the previous round. Falcao gave the Spaniards the lead early on with his first goal for his new club, running in to head Diego's corner past Forster. Courtois had to be on his toes to keep out Hooper soon afterwards, but Falcao, Turan and Diego could all have added to the lead before the break. Ki tested Courtois again after the restart, but midway through the second half Diego made it two after Turan set him up following a quick passing move. A promising start for Atlético, with all their new signings showing promise.
