Athletic Bilbao lost their first leg match against Lokomotiv Moscow, although they did score an important away goal which gives them a good chance of making it through to the next round, and a possible meeting with Manchester United. If any team in Spain can adapt to temperatures starting at minus ten and dropping, that is Athletic, and they took the lead following a good run by Susaeta late in the first half, Muniain collecting his pass and firing an angled shot past Guilherme. Llorente, Amorebieta and De Marcos all had chances to increase the lead before the break, but Maicón tested Iraizoz at the other end, and with an hour on the clock Glushakov equalised from the penalty spot after Aurtenetxe fouled Caicedo in the area. Athletic's long season started to take its toll after that, and ten minutes later the ex Málaga and Levante striker collected Yanbaev's cross and fired a shot past Iraizoz to win it for the Russian side.
