Puerto Rico 1 - Spain 2

Spain won their first match after their Euro 2012 victory, although the 1-2 scoreline against Puerto Rico looked a little short in the end. The Central American side are ranked number 138 in the World, but with nine men behind the ball they kept Del Bosque's boys at bay until five minutes before the break, when a long shot from Cazorla bounced past keeper Gaudette and in to the net. When Fàbregas volleyed home a second from a Navas cross on the stroke of half time it looked as if the floodgates were going to open, but although Cazorla hit the bar and Llorente and Torres brought good saves out of the keeper, they could not add to the lead. As the game wore on the heat and the high number of changes took their toll, and in a first real attack by the locals, Héctor Ramos headed on Gaudette's long clearance for substitute Marc Cintrón to get one back. Spain held on comfortably for the win though after that, although France and the rest will surely give them a bigger challenge when the World Cup qualifiers begin next month. (15.08.12)
