Friendly international

Spain 5 - Saudi Arabia 0

A comfortable win for Spain in their latest friendly international, Del Bosque's side running out 5-0 winners against Saudi Arabia. With several key players rested, Fernando Torres was given the captain's armband on his 100th appearance, and he went close a couple of times early on. Midway through the first half however a good run by Pedro ended with Abdullah only pushing out his shot as far as Cazorla, who controlled the ball and fired a shot back in to the net. And just four minutes later Pedro himself ran though to lob the ball over the keeper for the second. Cazorla curled a shot against the upright before the break, and just two minutes after the restart half time substitute Xavi made three with a well struck free kick. Soon afterwards David Villa came on for his first appearance for Spain since his injury last winter, and he was soon on the scoresheet, converting a penalty after Al-Beeshi brought down Monreal in the area for the 52nd international goal of his career. And ten minutes later Pedro wrapped things up with his second of the night, running on to Silva's through ball to chip Abdullah once again. A festival atmosphere in Pontevedra, but the real test comes next Tuesday when the triple champions open their World Cup campaign in Georgia. (07.09.12)
