Champions League, semi-final, first leg

For the second year in a row it looks as if Spain's big two are going to fall at the final hurdle after Real Madrid lost 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening. The hero of the night for the German side was Lewandowski, who scored all four of their goals, the last from the penalty spot. Cristiano Ronaldo momentarily equalized for Madrid before the break, but as with Barcelona the night before, the German team were too good for them. (24.04.13)

Barcelona are virtually out of the Champions League after they were beaten 4-0 by Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening! Müller opened the scoring for the Bundesliga side midway through the first half, and Mario Gómez, Robben and Müller added three more after the restart to hand Barça their biggest defeat in recent history. Borussia Dortmund 4 - Real Madrid 1

For the second year in a row it looks as if Spain's big two are going to fall at the final hurdle, Real Madrid losing 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund just a day after Barcelona's heavy defeat at Bayern Munich. The hero of the night for the German side was Lewandowski, who scored all four of their goals, the first coming in the eighth minute after Götze crossed in from the left wing. Reus had tested Diego López before that, but Madrid gradually got back in the game as the first half progressed, free kicks by Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso causing some problems for Weidenfeller and his defence before Ronaldo equalized after Hummels gave the ball away to Higuaín. Within ten minutes of the restart however the German team scored two more, Lewandowski beating the offside trap to collect a pass from Reus and fire a shot past Diego, and the Polish striker completing a hat-trick after picking up Schmelzer's deflected shot and dragging the ball past Pepe to beat the keeper once again. Just twelve minutes later Alonso bundled over Reus in the area, and up stepped Lewandowski to complete the scoring from the penalty spot. A good win for Jürgen Klopp's side, and although Ronaldo's away goal gives Madrid a slight hope, a first ever all-German final looks on the cards. (24.04.13)

Bayern Munich 4 - Barcelona 0

Barcelona are virtually out of the Champions League after they were beaten 4-0 by Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening! The Bundesliga team started strongly, Valdés having to save from Robben before Müller opened the scoring after Dante headed back Robben's lofted pass. Piqué and Alexis were both lucky to be let off penalty appeals for handling in the area, but four minutes after the restart Bayern went two up when Mario Gómez turned the ball in to the net from a clearly offside position after Müller headed over Robben's corner. With Messi back in the line-up but clearly not yet fully fit, Tito Vilanova's side hardly troubled Neuer in the local goal, and Robben scored a third after rounding Jordi Alba to beat Valdés, Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai waving away protests by the Catalans that the fullback had been obstructed by Müller. Bartra missed a couple of chances to get the away goal his team needed, and with eight minutes to go Müller made it four after getting on the end of Alaba's cross from the left wing. In the end some dubious refereeing decisions contributed to Barça biggest defeat in recent history, but to be honest Bayern looked much the better team on the night. (23.04.13)
