Confederations Cup

Spain 10 - Tahiti 0

Spain clocked up a record 10-0 victory against Oceania champions Tahiti in their second group game, the highest tally ever in the competition and the third time in their history that they have reached double figures. Del Bosque made ten changes from the first choice line-up he put out against Uruguay, but the team still included the likes of Torres, Villa, Silva, Mata and Cazorla, a clear demonstration of the depth of their squad. Torres it was who opened the scoring in the fifth minute after a finding a gap in a shaky defence, but the Pacific islanders held on bravely for almost half an hour before Silva and Torres added two more in a minute. Villa got a couple more either side of half time, and Torres and Villa both completed their hat-tricks a few minutes later, the latter now with 56 goals for his country and the former with 35 (only Raúl stands between them with 44). Midway through the second half Mata got in on the act as well, but Tahiti keeper Roche did at least make two good saves from Villa and Silva, and Torres fired a penalty kick against the crossbar after Aitamai had handled in the area, much to the delight of the Brazilian crowd. They would have loved to see Tahiti score, but they just didn't have the quality to take advantage of the few half-chances they had, and Torres and Silva completed the scoring in the last ten minutes to give Spain an all-but-mathematical place in the semi-finals.
