Defending champions Atlético Madrid kicked off their campaign to retain the title with a convincing 0-3 win over Hapoel Tel-Aviv. Although Simeone left Falcao and several other key players back in Spain, their replacements were more than up to the task. Raúl García and Diego Costa both brought early saves out of Edel Apoula, and with eight minutes to go to the break Cristian Rodríguez opened his account with his new club after Diego Costa set him up. Three minutes later Costa himself got the second after Raúl García won the ball in midfield and left Adrián to set him up, and after the restart García made it three after connecting with Emre's corner. Keeper Sergio Asenjo had little to do all evening, and substitute Koke could have increased the lead with a little more luck near the end.
