Athletic Bilbao's poor form this season continued when they were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Sparta Prague in the second round of the Europa League ties. A shadow of the side which knocked the likes of Manchester United out on their way to last season's final, Bielsa's team went behind midway through the first half when Zapotocny thrashed a long shot wide of Iraizoz. Seconds earlier Kadlec had hit the post for the Czech side, and before the half time whistle Balaj made it two with a header from Huesbauer's cross which went in off Aduríz. Gurpegui brought a good save out of Vaclik soon after the interval, but a few minutes later Huesbauer scored a third from the penalty spot after Castillo was adjudged to have kicked Kadlec in the chest as he cut into the area from the right wing. De Marcos got one back later on after good work by Muniain, but with the ostracized Llorente not featuring until the final minutes, the Basques could not prevent a defeat which leaves them down at the bottom of their group.
