Athletic Bilbao are on the verge of elimination after losing 2-3 to Olympique Lyon, although a draw in the other group game keeps them in with a slim chance of making it through to the knock-out stage. Bielsa's side had only picked up one point from their first three games, and once again they went behind when Gomis headed Gourcuff's free kick past Gorka Iraizoz midway through the first half. Vercoutre was tested a couple of times before the break, but with the first half coming to an close Iraizoz had to save efforts from Gomis and Lacazette, and the ball fell kindly for Gourcuff to score his team's second. The Basque side came back after the restart though, Ander Herrera drilling the rebound past Vercoutre after the keeper bravely cleared from Amorebieta, and Aduríz leveling the scores from the penalty spot after Ander was tripped on the right of the area by Gonalons. But a few minutes later Lacazette restored the lead after Fofana set him up, and after that the French side held on to make it a fourth straight group win. Athletic still can qualify for the next round however, although they have to win their next two games against Hapoel Kiryat and Sparta Prague (that one by two goals or more), and hope that the already qualified Lyon do them a favour by beating Prague in their next match.
