A surprise in the Calderón stadium on Thursday evening, Atlético Madrid all but out of the Europa League this season after a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Rubin Kazan. Karadeniz put the Russian side ahead in the sixth minute after Sergio Asenjo could only push out a shot from Rondón, and the ex Málaga striker brought a good save out of the keeper later on in the first half. Rubin were left with ten men when Sharonov was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Falcao on the stroke of half time, but Atlético couldn't take advantage, their best chances an shot from Falcao which hit the bar, and an Adrián header following a corner which went just wide. With the game in the last minute of injury time Simeone urged his keeper to go up in to the opponents' box for a corner, but Ermeneko cleared the ball upfield for ex-Athletic Bilbao midfielder Orbaiz to run the ball in to the empty net. A goal which could have been avoided, but Atleti now need a near miracle if they are to carry on in the competition.
