Europa League play-off round, second leg

Real Sociedad were unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League after losing 3-0 to Krasnodar on Thursday evening. A 1-0 first leg lead was cancelled out when Joaozinho converted a hotly disputed penalty with twenty minutes to go, and late strikes by Pereyra and Ari took the Russian side through. Villarreal will be in tomorrow’s league stage draw though after they cruised through against Kazakhstan’s Astana. Already 0-3 up from a week ago, they ran out 4-0 winners on the night with two strikes either side of half time by Vietto, a Bruno penalty and a fourth goal by Nahuel. (28.08.14)

Villarreal 4 - Astana 0

Villarreal will be in tomorrow’s league stage draw though after they cruised through against Kazakhstan’s Astana. Already 0-3 up from a week ago, Marcelino used the occasion to give a run out to some of his lesser used players. Gerard Moreno went close twice early on, and midway through the first half Vietto opened his account for his new side after good work by Espinosa and Moi Gómez. Vietto missed a sitter before the break, but a few minutes after the restart he scored his second of the night after connecting with a Jaume Costa cross. Bruno made it three from the penalty spot after Dmitrenko brought down Gabriel following a corner, and soon afterwards Vietto set up young substitute Nahuel for the fourth.

Krasnodar 3 - Real Sociedad 0

Real Sociedad were unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League after losing 3-0 to Russia’s FC Krasnodar on a hot Thursday evening. Defending a 1-0 first leg lead, the Basque side were pushed back right from the start, and only a good performance from new keeper Rulli kept the scores level. With twenty minutes to go though the locals were awarded a hotly disputed penalty when Laborde fell under a challenge from De la Bella, and Joaozinho fired the spot kick in off the post. Rulli had to go off with an injury a few minutes later, and three minutes from the end Pereyra drilled home a second after a defender could only clear a long throw in to his path. Real threw everything forward looking for the away goal, but Ari scored a third on a rapid breakaway, and the game ended in disarray when Bergara and Joaozinho were both sent off.
