Match round-up - Second Division A, Day 3

Girona are two points clear at the top of the second division after their nearest rivals Betis were beaten 4-1 by Ponferradina on Sunday lunchtime. The locals were on top from the start, Acorán hitting the crossbar early on, but the visitors went in at the break a goal up after Jorge Molina finished off a rapid counter-attack midway through the first half. Yuri levelled the scores however just two minutes in to the second half with a shot whilst lying on the ground, and soon afterwards Acorán put the locals ahead with a shot from the tightest of angles after Pablo Infante put him through. Yuri made it three with less than an hour gone, turning a shot past Adán after connecting with an Acorán cross, and the Brazilian striker completed his hat-trick with a quarter of an hour to go, steering the ball past the keeper with his heel from another Acorán assist. The result takes Manolo Díaz’s side past their opponents in the table.

Las Palmas end the weekend back in second spot after they beat Lugo 3-0 later in the evening. All the goals came in the second half, Araujo latching on to a deflected pass to turn a shot past José Juan just a couple of minutes after the restart. Guzmán headed a second a few minutes later after the visiting keeper could only push a Nauzet free kick on to the post, and Araujo got his second of the evening with ten minutes to go, the Argentinian striker the quickest to react after a blocked shot looped up in to the area. The Canary Islanders are level on points with Sporting, and a point above five other teams, including Valladolid, who won 3-1 against Racing Santander. The two Oscars put the locals two up either side of half time, Oscar González taking advantage of a shaky defence to open the scoring, and Oscar Díaz beating Mario with a shot from the edge of the area. When Roger headed in an Omar assist midway through the second half the game appeared to be over, but with a quarter of an hour to go new keeper Javi Varas got himself sent off for a foul on Concha, and after Soria converted the resulting spot kick, the Cantabrians hit the woodwork twice.

Barcelona B are also on six points after they beat Zaragoza 4-1, a result which takes Eusebio’s side up to fourth on goal difference. With player such as Munir and Sandro on international duty, and others injured, the coach had to put out a weakened side. However Whalley had to save from dongou early on after good work by Adama, and with ten minutes to go to the interval Dongou opened the scoring with an angled header from a long free kick, the referee over-ruling his linesman who had signalled for the positional offside of Costa. Eldin latched on to Borja’s headed pass to level the scores on the stroke of half time, but just a minute in to the second half Dongou restored the lead with his second of the evening and his fourth of the season, making him the second division joint top scorer together with his ex team-mate Araujo. Gumbau headed in the third on the hour mark after Joan Román chipped the ball across from left of goal, and Joan Román himself rounded things off with the fourth, cutting in to the area before beating Whalley with an angled shot.

Alcorcón also join the group with two wins under their belts after they clocked up a 1-2 victory at Mirandés. Oscar Plano put the Madrid based side two up at the break, the first with a low shot past Imanol following a throw-in, and the second after picking up a pass by Bobley Anderson. However midway through the second half Urko Vera got on the end of an Aitor cross to get one back, and the locals could have saved a point had Falcón not kept out a Rúper penalty after Angel pulled down Vera in the area soon afterwards. Mirandés stay on four points, level with Leganés, who beat Mallorca 3-1 for the first win since being promoted in the summer. The Balearic Islanders actually took the lead in the first half when Agus headed in a Marco Asensio corner. However a hat-trick by Borja Lázaro in a fifteen minute period in the middle of the second half turned the scoreline around, the striker heading in an Alvaro cross to make it all square, then turning in a Velasco centre, and finally beating Cabrero again with a looping header from an Alvaro corner. Girona top the table pending Sunday’s games after they beat Tenerife 2-0 on Saturday evening. Guarrotxena went close a couple of times for the visitors early on, but midway through the first half Sandaza gave the Catalans the lead, turning the ball past Jacobo after the keeper had blocked a shot by Juncà. Some twenty minutes in to the second half Sandaza hit the bar, and Carlos Ruíz stopped Mata’s follow up shot with his arm. That earned him a red card, and Felipe Sanchón drilled home the resulting penalty to give his side their third win in a row. Sporting Gijón drop below Girona, but stay in second spot after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Albacete. The Asturians will be grateful for the point though after Pablo Pérez headed the equalizer for them from a Juan Muñiz corner in the 93 rd minute of the match. Jorge Díaz had scrambled the opener following an Edu Ramos cross shortly before the break, the refereeing waving away appeals for a possible hand ball, and both sides hit the woodwork before Pérez struck.

Alavés and Recreativo are also undefeated after their first three games, both winning on Saturday after drawing their two openers. Alavés won 1-3 at local rivals Osasuna, a match which was played in a festive atmosphere between the two sets of supporters, Juli put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot after Echaide tripped Sangalli in the area on the quarter hour mark, and Ion Vélez and Migue added two more in quick succession at the start of the second half, the first after Sangalli set him up on a quick breakaway, and the second with a header after Riesgo failed to cut out Manu García’s headed pass. Nekounam did get one back with another penalty after Juli brought down Cadamuro, but it came too late to prevent a first defeat for Jan Urban’s side.

Meanwhile Recreativo’s fans finally saw some goals after the Andalusians beat Llagostera 2-0. After two score-less draws, Pedro Ríos finally got their first goal of the season when René could only push out a shot by Cabrera on the stroke of half time. The locals dominated for much of the 90 minutes, and Ríos got his second of the night after Montoro and Víctor Díaz combined to set him up with twenty minutes to go. Sabadell and Numancia came in to their match looking for their first points after both lost their opening games. In the end though it was the Soria based team which came away with the spoils, Sergi Enrich and Braian Rodríguez scoring before the break and Juanma after in a much needed 0-3 win. (06.09.14)
