Europa League group stage, day 2

Both Spanish sides top their groups on four points after the second round of games on Thursday. Sevilla kicked things off with a 2-2 draw at Rijeka, M’bia saving a point for the Andalusians with an injury time strike. Iago Aspas had given them the lead before the break, but early in the second half Kolodziejczak was sent off for giving away a penalty which Kramaric converted, and Kvrzic added a second for the Croatian team a few minutes later. Villarreal had no problems though seeing off Apollon later in the evening, Gerard Moreno and Espinosa scoring two each to help them to a comfortable 4-0 victory. (02.10.14)

Rijeka 2 - Sevilla 2

Sevilla top their group after a 2-2 draw at Rijeka, although it took an injury time strike from M’bia to save a point for the Andalusians in the end. Iago Aspas had given Unai Emery’s side the lead midway through the first half, the on-loan Liverpool striker intercepting a poor header from Tomecak before making himself space to beat Vargic, his first goal since joining the club in the summer. However early in the second half Kolodziejczak got himself sent off for giving away a penalty on Kramaric which the striker himself converted, and a few minutes later Kvrzic added a second for the Croatian team after Kramaric set him up. Once again though M’bia saved the day after connecting with a cross from Trémoulinas to turn a shot wide of the keeper. (02.10.14)

Villarreal 4 - Apollon 0

Villarreal had no problems seeing off Apollon on Thursday evening, a 4-0 victory taking them to the top of their group. The East coast side had won their last nine home games in European competitions, and within eight minutes they went ahead, Vietto and Cani combining to put Gerard through for him to shoot under the legs of the keeper. Espinosa added two more either side of half time, both from assists by Vietto, and with ten minutes to go Gerard also scored his second of the night after a good run by substitute Gio took four defenders out of the play. The team dedicated the win to their coach Marcelino, who could not be at the ground after his father passed away earlier in the day. (02.10.14)
