Under 21 European play-offs

Spain 1 - Serbia 2

A devastating defeat for Spain’s under 21 side against Serbia, the result not only leaving the double defending champions out of next summer’s European finals, but also meaning that they will not have a chance of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil! After the 0-0 draw in the first leg Spain really needed to score, but despite having over three-quarters possession, it was the visitors went ahead on the half hour mark with their first real attack, Gayà’s attempted clearance from Pesic’s cross hitting Saúl Ñíguez and deflecting in to the net. A cynical tackle took team captain Muniain out of the game early in the second half, but Celades brought on Sandro, Sarabia and Oliver in an attempt to turn things around. Sandro hit the post and Isco and Saúl had efforts saved as the youngsters threw everything forward, and two minutes in to injury time a Sergi Roberto centre bounced past everyone into the net. Suddenly there was hope, but in a frantic last push Munir saw his shot saved, and Kostic put paid to any chance of a comeback on a rapid breakaway just a minute later. (14.10.14)
