Europa League group stage, day 5

Setbacks for the two Liga teams in the penultimate round of Europa League group games, although both are still well placed to qualify for the knock-out stage. Sevilla were beaten 2-0 at Feyenoord, Toornstra and El Ahmadi getting the goals in the second half to take the Dutch side above the defending champions in the table. The Andalusians only need a draw at home to Rijeka in two weeks’ time though to ensure their place in the last 32. Later in the evening Villarreal were held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Mönchengladbach, a result which keeps Marcelino’s side in the second qualifying spot of their group. Vietto and Cheryshev twice gave the locals the lead, but a Raffael strike and a Xhaka free kick kept the Germans a point above their hosts in the rankings. Villarreal really need to win now at Apollon in Cyprus to be sure of going through, although a draw would do if Zurich don’t beat Mönchengladbach in the other group game. (27.11.14)

Feyenoord 2 - Sevilla 0

A set-back for Sevilla in their penultimate group game, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Feyenoord leaving the Andalusians down in second spot in their mini-league. Following a fairly event-less first half, Toornstra gave the locals the lead after picking up a square pass from Boëtius some ten minutes after the restart. Krychowiak brought a good save out of Vermeer soon afterwards, and M’bia headed a free kick in to the net only for the referee to rule out the goal for a non-existent offside. Boëtius came close to a second however after a good run, and with seven minutes to go El Ahmadi volleyed a shot over Sergio Rico after Kazim-Richards chested the ball back to him to take the Dutch side above the defending champions in the table. Emery’s team still only need a draw at home to Rijeka in two weeks’ time though to ensure their place in the last 32.

Villarreal 2 - Borussia Mönchengladbach 2

Villarreal were held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Mönchengladbach on Thusday evening, a result which keeps Marcelino’s side a point behind the Germans in the second qualifying spot of their group. Bruno saw an early header cleared off the line by Raffael before Vietto picked up a pass from Jaume Costa to beat Sommer and give his team a half-time lead. Sergio Asenjo had to keep out Hrgota after the restart though, and soon afterwards Raffael made it all square with an impressive shot which the keeper got a hand to but couldn’t stop from entering the net. Cheryshev took advantage of a poor clearance by Korb to put the locals back in front a few minutes later, but Xhaka levelled the scores once again with a scorching free kick in off the bar, and Herrmann almost won it for the visitors when he hit the post near the end. Villarreal now really need to win their last match at Apollon in Cyprus to be sure of going through, although a draw would do if Zurich don’t beat Mönchengladbach in the other group game.
