European Championship finals – group stage

Spain 3 – Turkey 0

A comfortable win for Spain in their second group game against Turkey, and they go in to the final match against Croatia needing a draw to tie up top spot of their group. Del Bosque put out the same line-up as in their opening match, and in the first few minutes Piqué headed over the top and Nolito shot just wide. With just over half an hour gone Morata headed in Nolito’s centre to put his side in front, and just three minutes later Nolito made it two himself, turning the ball past Babocan after Topal could only head up a lob into the box from Fàbregas. Silva missed a chance to make it three, but just three minutes after the restart a long passing move ended with Iniesta and Jordi Alba combining to set up Morata for his second of the night, the referee waving away claims that Alba was offside in the build up. After that Spain slowed things down to conserve energy for the upcoming fixtures, Bruno coming on to sit alongside Busquets in midfield, and the Villarreal captain went close with a couple of long efforts. Yilmaz and Sahan did go close later on for Turkey, but De Gea hardly had a save to make all evening, and “La Roja” clock up a tenth game in a row without letting in a single goal. (17.06.16)
