European Super Cup

Real Madrid 3 - Sevilla 2 (after extra time)

Trondheim, Norway. The new season kicked off with the all-Spanish European Super Cup, Champions League winners Real Madrid beating Europa League victors Sevilla 3-2 thanks to a strike by Dani Carvajal in the last minute of extra time! The game got off to a slow start, and there was little action until Marco Asensio (a surprise inclusion in Zidane’s starting line-up despite the absence of Ronaldo, Bale and Benzema) picked up a ball outside of the area to curl a shot over Sergio Rico in to the net. Kiko Casilla had to save from Carriço a few minutes later though, and with five minutes to go to the break Franco Vázquez equalized with a snap shot from the edge of the area after Vitolo pulled down a cross from the right wing. Midway through the second half Konoplyanka gave the Andalusians the lead from the penalty spot after Sergio Ramos fouled Vitolo in the area, and it looked like they were heading for a victory until Ramos headed in a Lucas Vázquez centre with the match already in time added on. That took the tie into extra time, and just two minutes later Sampaoli’s side were left with ten men when Kolodziejczak picked up a second booking. Rico kept out efforts from James, Lucas and Casemiro however, and Ramos had a strike ruled out for what the referee considered to be a previous foul. But with a penalty shoot-out looming, Carvajal cut a swathe through a tired defence to steer a shot past Rico for the winner. For the second season in a row Sevilla had been beaten at the last hurdle, and Madrid have their first trophy of the new campaign . (09.08.16)
