Champions League, round of 16, first leg

Sevilla 2 - Leicester City 1

Sevilla beat Leicester City 2-1 in their first leg tie, although they will rue the fact that they wasted chances to go in to the return match with a bigger advantage. Visiting keeper Schmeichel saved an early Correa penalty after the Argentinian youngster was brought down by Morgan, and midway through the first half Sarabia got on the end of Escudero’s cross to head the Andalusians in to the lead. Soon afterwards an effort from Jovetic looped off a defender on to the bar, and either side of the break Schmeichel had to save from Sarabia, Correa and Mariano. A few minutes in to the second half Vitolo hit the post with a shot from a wide angle, and with just over an hour gone Correa made it two after Jovetic set him up on a quick breakaway. However Ranieri’s side got back in the tie when Vardy turned Drinkwater’s cross past Sergio Rico with twenty minute or so to go, and with the game coming to an end the locals hit the woodwork for the third time when Rami headed a corner against the crossbar. The away goal leaves the tie in the balance though, and everything will now be decided in the King Power stadium in a month’s time. (22.02.17)

Bayer Leverkusen 2 - Atlético Madrid 4

Atlético Madrid have one foot in the quarter finals of the Champions League after a 2-4 victory at Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night! Simeone’s side went two up by the break, Saúl Ñíguez opening the scoring with an impressive shot from the edge of the area, and Griezmann getting the second after Gameiro set him up on a quick counter-attack. Wendell turned a Filipe Luis cross against his own bar early on and Griezmann could have added a third when Leno deflected his shot over the bar on another breakaway, but Moyà had to make a top class save from Kampl, and just three minutes in to the second half Bellarabi got one back after connecting with a cross from Henrichs. The game was moving at an electric pace though, Gameiro restoring the two goal cushion from the penalty spot after he was pulled over on the edge of the area by Dragovic, and Savic deflecting the ball in to his own net after Moyà could only push out a cross by Brandt. Chicharito fired a shot over the top and Filipe Luis had to clear a shot from Brandt off the line as the German side pushed for the equalizer, but with four minutes to go substitute Fernando Torres got on the end of a Vrsaljko centre to head a fourth past the local keeper.
