Europa League, quarter finals, second leg

KRC Genk 1 - Celta 1

Celta are through to the semi-finals of a European competition for the first time in their history after they knocked out Genk in their quarter final tie! A 3-2 win from the first leg gave them a slight advantage going in to the return game, but the two away goals which the Belgian team scored in that match meant that Berizzo’s side needed at least a draw to qualify. Samatta headed an early chance for the locals over the top, but Iago Aspas and Pione Sisto fired shots just wide, and Beauvue brought a couple of good saves out of ex Valencia keeper Mat Ryan either side of half time before Sisto ran through to give the Galicians the lead. However just three minutes later Trossard made it all square on the night after winning the ball off Cabral, and the result was in doubt right up until the final whistle. The other three quarter final ties were even closer though, Manchester United and Ajax winning through against Anderlecht and Schalke in extra time, and Olympique Lyon beating Besiktas on penalties. All three who went through have a long history in European competitions, and whoever Celta get in Friday’s draw it won’t be easy. (20.04.17)
