Match round-up - Second Division A, Day 38

Only one game in the second division on Sunday, Lugo and UCAM Murcia drawing 0-0 in the mid-day kick-off to leave the Galicians still in tenth place, and their opponents four points below them in fifteenth. The visitors were left with ten men with only a quarter of an hour gone when Hugo Alvarez was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Fede Vico. However Biel Ribas and his defence held fast after that to pick up a valuable point. (14.05.17)

With the key games of the penultimate weekend of the first division due to take place on Sunday, eight of the second division fixtures were played on Saturday. Without doubt the most important of those was between the top two teams, Levante running out 2-1 winners over Girona to end the weekend needing one point from their last four matches to take the second division title. Morales took advantage of some slack defending to give the locals the lead in the seventh minute, and Rober latched on to a return pass from Roger to make it two some twenty minutes in to the second half. At that point the home side had the head-to-head advantage as well, but a few minutes later Longo battled though to beat Raúl Fernández and match the result from the prior meeting between the two sides. Girona still have a seven point gap over the chasing sides despite the defeat however after Huesca and Tenerife cancelled each other out in a 2-2 draw. The Canary Islanders went two up with less than half an hour on the clock, Lozano twice beating a shaky Queco Piña, who was replacing the suspended Sergio Herrera. However second half substitute Borja Lázaro got one back and then won a penalty off Iñaki with two minutes to go which Samu Sáiz converted. Lázaro was sent off for a second bookable offence in injury time, but he had done enough to keep his side in sixth spot, just ahead of Valladolid, who won 2-1 against struggling Mallorca. Raúl de Tomás (who missed a sitter in the opening minutes) got both goals for the locals, the first from the penalty spot on the half hour mark, and the second after Mata set him up with eight minutes to go. Lekic got a consolation goal for the islanders after combining with Lago Junior, but it came too late to change the result.

Mallorca end the day in next to bottom spot, now only three points above Mirandés after they won 0-1 at Elche. The visitors played all the second half with ten men after Urko Vera was sent off, but Carlos Moreno got the winner in the ninetieth minute to drag their hosts down in to the relegation spots. Elche drop a point below Nàstic, who fought back from two down to draw 2-2 against Oviedo. Carlos de Pena and Toché put the Asturians two up with only a quarter of the game gone, but two goals in the last half by Sergio Tejera saved a point for the Catalans. They stay in the bottom four however after Alcorcón beat neighbours Rayo Vallecano 2-0, the result taking the Madrid based team above Nàstic on head-to-head goal difference. Substitute Iván Alejo gave the locals the lead with ten minutes to go, and although he was red-carded a minute later for a foul on Trashorras, Víctor Pérez wrapped things up soon afterwards. Córdoba and Almería moved two points clear of the relegation zone after both won, the former beating Reus 1-0 with a Rodri header some five minutes from the end, and the latter winning 2-0 against Numancia, Fidel opening the scoring early on, and Antonio Puertas adding the second with just over half an hour gone. The fight to avoid the drop is still incredibly tight however, with only five points between Nàstic and tenth placed Lugo. (13.05.17)

Girona moved closer to tying up the second of the direct promotion spots after third placed Getafe lost 2-1 at Sevilla Atlético on Friday evening. The Madrid based team had gone seven games without defeat, but they went behind when Marc Gual beat Alvaro after the keeper saved from Ivi midway through the first half. Jorge Molina made it all square with an angled shot some twenty minutes from the end, but Marc Gual restored the lead from a Carmona cross soon afterwards, and the game ended in disarray as players and staff clashed, with red cards for Lacen and his coach Pepe Bordalás. Getafe are still seven points below Girona pending their game tomorrow, but they remain two points clear of fourth placed Cádiz, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Zaragoza later in the evening. Angel came up against Cifuentes a couple of times before he headed in a José Enrique cross following a quickly taken free kick just before the break. However with the game coming to an end substitute Aitor García latched on to a loose ball to fire home the equalizer, leaving the Maños still only five points above the drop zone. (12.05.17)
