Match round-up - First Division, Day 12

Eibar moved away from the danger zone in spectacular fashion after they beat Betis 5-0 on Monday evening! The Basque team had only picked up two points from their last seven games, but they went two up by the break with a Jordi Amat own goal and an Escalante header. Some ten minutes in to the second half Charles converted a penalty after Mandi was sent off for bringing him down, and Charles and Sergi Enrich added two more after that for the final result. Valencia are the only side keeping pace with Barcelona at the moment, and they stay four points behind the leaders (who visit Mestalla next weekend) after a 0-2 win at Espanyol on Sunday. Moreno and Darder hit the woodwork for the locals before the break, but goals from Kondogbia and Santi Mina late on gave the Ches the three points. Villarreal end the weekend in sixth place after they drew 1-1 at Athletic Bilbao, Aduríz saving a point for the Basque side after Trigueros (who had an earlier penalty saved by Kepa) had given the visitors the lead. Further down the table Málaga moved to within a point of escaping the drop zone after they beat Deportivo 3-2 in the mid-day kick-off, Borja Bastón winning it late on for Michel’s side after the lead had changed hands twice. The result left Las Palmas down at the bottom of the table after they lost 0-2 to Levante, Doukouré and Jason getting the goals in the second half to leave Pako Ayestarán’s job hanging by a thread. Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the table after a 0-3 victory at Leganés on Saturday afternoon. Luis Suárez scored twice either side of half time, both times after Cuéllar had saved from Paco Alcácer, and Paulinho got the third at the end after Messi laid the ball back to him. The Catalans are now a massive ten points clear of Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid after they cancelled each other out in a 0-0 draw later in the evening. It was an intense game, the referee showing eight yellow cards and turning down numerous penalty appeals throughout the ninety minutes. Sevilla are now just two points below both of them after they came from behind to beat Celta 2-1, Muriel and Nolito getting the goals either side of the break after Maxi Gómez had given the Galicians an early lead. Earlier in the day Getafe won 4-1 against Alavés to move up to tenth, a Bergara header and a Molina penalty putting them two up in less than ten minutes, and Angel adding two more after the break before Christian Santos got a late consolation for the visitors. La Liga returned after the short international break, Girona and Real Sociedad kicking things off with a 1-1 draw on Friday night which left both teams in mid-table. Willian José fired the visitors into an early lead, but Stuani headed the equaliser from Portu’s lifted cross after the interval. Moroccan keeper Bono had to make saves from Janujaz and Oyarzabal late on though to ensure a point for the Catalans. (17.11.17)
