Champions League, day five

Barcelona join Real Madrid in the last sixteen after a 0-0 draw at Juventus on Wednesday. With one eye on Sunday’s league game against Valencia, Valverde left Messi on the bench at the start. Ter Stegen and his defence held fast though for a point which made sure of top spot in their group with a game still to go. Meanwhile Atlético Madrid kept their slim hopes of qualifying alive with a 2-0 victory over Roma. Griezmann and Gameiro got the goals after the interval, but Simeone’s side still need to win at Chelsea and hope that Qarabag can at least get a point at Roma in a fortnight’s time, otherwise they will have to make do with the Europa League this season. Real Madrid made sure of their place in the knock-out stage once again after an emphatic 0-6 win at APOEL Nicosia on Tuesday night! All the goals came in a brilliant half hour period either side of half time, Modric firing the visitors into the lead, Benzema scoring twice and Nacho also netting before the break, and Ronaldo adding two more after the restart. Madrid will only finish second however after Tottenham also won in the other group game. Sevilla meanwhile produced an epic comeback to draw 3-3 against Liverpool, the result keeping the Andalusians in second spot, but still leaving them with work to do in their last game at Maribor. Two from Firmino and one from Mané before the interval appeared to have given the Premier League side an unassailable lead, but Ben Yedder scored twice in the second half, and Pizarro got the equaliser right at the end.
