Copa del Rey, semi finals, first leg

Barcelona have the edge over Valencia going in to next week’s second leg after a 1-0 victory in the Nou Camp on Thursday. Neither side had any clear cut chances in a cautious first half, although Messi did test Jaume either side of the break from a couple of free kicks. Cillessen first save came after the break from a long shot by Parejo, but midway through the second half Luis Suárez headed what was to prove the only goal after a good run by Messi from the left of the area. Jaime prevented Alcácer from adding a second however, and the tie is still in the balance. (01.02.18)

With Real Madrid and Atlético out of the competition, Leganés are the only side from the capital left in the semi-finals. Garitano’s team have never been past the last sixteen in their history, but they now have a chance to make it through to the final after a 1-1 draw against Sevilla in the first leg. Muriel latched on to Sarabia’s pass to turn a shot past Champagne in the twentieth minute, and the local keeper had several saves to make before the break. However some ten minutes in to the second half Bustinza headed a corner back in to the goalmouth, and as Sergio Rico punched at air, Siovas headed the ball in to the empty net. Everything will now be decided in the Sánchez Pizjuan stadium next Wednesday. (31.01.18)
