First division – day 37

Levante did what no other team has done this season, beat Barcelona in the league! The Catalans were looking to finish the current campaign unbeaten, but a much changed line-up (with Messi rested) incredibly found themselves 5-1 down with less than an hour gone, Boateng netting a hat-trick and Bardhi adding a brace. Coutinho scored two more after that to clock up his own hat-trick, and Luis Suárez pegged it back to 5-4 from the penalty spot, but the locals held on for an epic win. Earlier on Sunday Barcelona’s city rivals Espanyol won 4-1 against bottom club Málaga, Gerard Moreno, Sergio García, Leo Baptistao and Piatti the scorers there. (13.05.18)

The penultimate round of games of the season, and Sevilla will take the last Europa League spot after a 2-2 draw at city rivals Betis on Saturday evening. They will have to enter at the play-off stage of the competition though as the two direct spots are already taken by Betis themselves, and by Villarreal, who won 2-4 at Deportivo. Sevilla are now three points clear of Getafe after they lost 0-1 at Atlético Madrid, and with the head-to-head record in favour of Joaquín Caparrós’s side, they can’t now be overtaken. Atlético meanwhile (who put out a full strength side despite the upcoming Europa League final), stay three points ahead of their city neighbours Real Madrid, who thrashed Celta 6-0, a result which ensured them of at least third spot, despite Valencia’s 0-1 victory at Girona. Elsewhere Real Sociedad won 3-2 against Leganés, Alavés beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1, and Eibar won 1-0 against Las Palmas, all matches with nothing at stake. (12.05.18)
