First division – day 8

Sevilla are the new leaders of the first division going in to the international break after they beat Celta 2-1 on Sunday! Goals either side of half time by Sarabia and Ben Yedder put the Andalusians two up, and although Boufal pulled one back for late on for the visitors (who were down to ten men), it was too late to change the result. Sevilla move a point ahead of Barcelona, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Valencia later in the evening. Garay gave the Ches the lead following a corner with only a minute on the clock, but Messi levelled it midway through the first half. Atlético Madrid are now level with the Catalans after a 1-0 victory against Betis, Correa the scorer there with a quarter of an hour to go, and Espanyol are fifth, on the same points as Real Madrid and Alavés, after they beat Villarreal 3-1. Goals in the last ten minutes by Darder and Piatti won it for the hosts after Ekambi had cancelled out Hernán Pérez’s opener. Earlier in the day Valladolid won 1-0 against Huesca in the mid-day game, a Rubén Alcaraz free kick on the half hour mark taking Ronaldo (the Brazilian one)’s new club up to seventh, and leaving their opponents down at the bottom of the table. More woe for Real Madrid on Saturday, a 1-0 defeat at Alavés meaning they have now gone four games without scoring a single goal! Lopetegui’s side had most of the play, but they were unable to find a way past Pacheco and his defence. And with the game in the fifth and final minute of time added-on, Manu García headed past Courtois following a corner to take his team level with Madrid on points. The other three games on Saturday all involved teams in the lower reaches of the table, Eibar climbing away from the danger zone after a 2-3 win at Girona in the early kick-off. Two goals from Stuani overturned an early Charles penalty, but strikes by Arbilla and Sergi Enrich after the break gave the three points to the Basque side. Levante are level with Eibar after they beat Getafe 0-1, Bardhi getting the only goal on the hour mark with a well struck free kick. And Leganés move off the bottom of the table after a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, Carrillo’s strike in the fifteenth minute taking the Madrid based side above their close neighbours. (06.10.18)

The weekend kicked off with the big Basque derby, Real Sociedad beating Athletic Bilbao 1-3 on Friday night to move up into the top half of the table. Oyarzabal gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot on the half hour mark, but Muniain levelled it just a couple of minutes later after a series of rebounds fell kindly for him. Sangalli restored the lead though just two minutes in to the second half from Zubeldia’s cross, and Oyarzabal converted a second penalty later on to put the game beyond the reach of the hosts.
