First division – day 34

Getafe hold on to the fourth Champions League spot, for another few days at least, after they drew 0-0 with neighbours Real Madrid on Thursday evening. Despite the result there were several chances, with Keylor Navas having to save from Arambarri, Molina and Mata in particular, and David Soria keeping out Benzema and Brahim Díaz. Sevilla are now level on points with Getafe though after they thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0, a result which left the Madrid based side at the bottom of the table, seven points away from safety. All the goals came in the second half, Promes starting things off and Munir adding two more before Ben Yedder and Bryan Gil completed the scoring. Gil by the way thus became the first player born in the 21st century to score in La Liga. Elsewhere Villarreal beat Real Sociedad 0-1, Gerard Moreno heading the only goal late on to virtually ensure first division football at the Madrigal stadium for another season. (25.04.19)

Barcelona will have to wait a few more days at least before being proclaimed as champions after Atlético Madrid beat fifth placed Valencia 3-2 on Wednesday evening. Morata and Griezmann twice put Simeone’s side ahead, but a Gameiro strike and a Parejo penalty cancelled them out both times. Correa fired home the winner however with ten minutes to go to keep the Colchoneros within nine points of the leaders. Valencia stay outside of the Champions League spots as a result, and Athletic Bilbao are now only three points below them after a 0-1 victory over Leganés, En-Nesyri heading a corner into his own net just before the break to give the Basque side the victory. Meanwhile the battle to avoid the drop took another turn when Levante, who started the day in the bottom three, beat Betis 4-0 in the last match of the evening. Campaña scored twice in the first half, and a Morales penalty and a Coke strike after the break took the Valencia based team right up to fourteenth, and left visiting coach Quique Setién on the verge of being fired. Girona now occupy the last relegation spot, and Celta are still only two points above them after they drew 1-1 at Espanyol, Maxi Gómez saving a point for the Galicians after Wu Lei had given the locals a first half lead with an acrobatic volley. Barcelona are just one win away from another league title after they beat Alavés 0-2 on Tuesday evening! Ernesto Valverde left Messi on the bench at the start, but a strike by Aleñá and a Luis Suárez penalty were enough to give his side the three points. Barça could even be champions tomorrow if Atlético lose. The other two games on Tuesday involved teams in the lower reaches of the table, Huesca beating Eibar 2-0 with second half goals from Gallego and Ávila to move off the bottom of the table pending Rayo’s match on Thursday. Valladolid meanwhile move out of the relegation spots to the detriment of Levante after a 1-0 victory over fellow strugglers Girona. Michel got the only goal midway through the second half to give his side their first home win in three months. The result takes them above the Catalans, who themselves are now just a point above the bottom three after a sixth defeat in a row. (23.04.19)
