First division – day 2

Atlético Madrid join Sevilla at the top of the table after another single goal victory, this time 0-1 at city rivals Leganés on Sunday. Joao Felix set up Vitolo for the winner with twenty minutes to go to leave the hosts at the bottom of the table together with Betis, who lost 5-2 at Barcelona. The Catalans had lost their first game, and they went behind to a strike by Fekir on the quarter hour mark. New signing Griezmann paid back the first instalment on his transfer fee though with goals either side of the break, and Carlos Pérez, Jordi Alba and Arturo Vidal added three more before Loren got a late consolation for the visitors. Meanwhile Real Sociedad moved up to sixth after a 0-1 win at Mallorca, Odegaard getting the winner there with seven minutes to go, and Alavés are one place behind them after they drew 0-0 with Espanyol in the first game of the day. Signs that Real Madrid’s problems are not over yet after they drew 1-1 at home to Valladolid on Saturday. Benzema appeared to have won it for Zidane’s side when he found the net with eight minutes to go, but Sergi Guardiola saved a point for the visitors near the end. Valencia are also off to a shaky start, and they were beaten 1-0 by Celta later in the evening. Gabriel Fernández got the only goal early on with a back-heel flick to give the Galicians their first points of the season. Elsewhere Getafe and Athletic Bilbao drew 1-1, Raúl García’s sixth minute opener cancelled out soon afterwards by Mata, and Osasuna and Eibar also shared the points in a scoreless draw earlier in the day. Sevilla top the table pending the rest of the weekend games after a 0-1 victory at neighbours Granada on Friday night. Joan Jordan got the winner in the second half following a quick breakaway to make it two away wins in a row for Lopetegui’s side. Later in the evening Levante came back from a goal down to beat regional rivals Villarreal 2-1. Gerard Moreno put the locals ahead in only the third minute, but Roger converted two penalties in a five minute period after the break, the first retaken after Andrés had saved from Morales, and the second after the keeper brought down the striker in the area.
