First division – day 7

Only two points separate the top six after Real Sociedad were beaten 3-2 by Sevilla in the last match on Sunday. For a few minutes the Basque team were virtual leaders after Oyarzabal put them ahead in the fourth minute. However Nolito equalised soon afterwards, and Ocampos and Franco Vázquez notched up two more before Portu rounded off the scoring near the end. The result takes Lopetegui’s side back up to sixth, level on points with their opponents, who are fifth. The other four games on Sunday involved teams further down in the table, with Eibar and Alavés both moving three points clear of the drop zone after 2-0 victories over Celta and Mallorca respectively. Mallorca are now next to bottom, a point below Espanyol, who are also in the relegation zone after losing 0-2 at home to Valladolid. Elsewhere Levante and Osasuna drew 1-1 the result leaving them both in mid-table, tied on points with Eibar, Alavés and Betis. (29.09.19)

The first of the big Madrid derbies took place on Saturday, with Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid playing out a 0-0 draw. The two keepers, Oblak and Courtois, were the stars of the match, in particular the former, who saved from Kroos a couple of times before the break, and from a Benzema header near the end. Zidane’s side stay a point ahead of their rivals at the top of the table, although now just two above Barcelona after the Catalans won 0-2 at Getafe earlier in the afternoon. Luis Suárez ran on to a long Ter Stegen clearance to lob David Soria just before half time, and Junior made it two soon after the restart to give the visitors their first away win of the season. They are still a point behind Granada however after the Andalusians beat bottom club Leganés 1-0, Antonio Puertas getting the only goal from a Soldado assist to keep the newly promoted team in second spot. Athletic Bilbao drop to sixth though after they were beaten 0-1 by Valencia in the early kick-off, Cheryshev completing a team move with just under half an hour gone to hand the Basques their first defeat of the season. Week 7 began a day after week 6 finished, with Villarreal thrashing Betis 5-1 to move up to fifth pending the rest of the weekend games. Ekambi headed in Cazorla’s corner before the break, and although Emerson made it all square a couple of minutes in to the second half, a Cazorla penalty and another strike by Ekambi restored the lead. And with the game coming to an end Gerard Moreno and Chukwueze added two more for the final score. (27.09.19)
