First division – day 14

Sevilla are up to third in the table, just a point behind the joint leaders, after a 0-1 victory over Valladolid in the last match on Sunday. Banega got the only goal with a twice-taken penalty after Nolito was brought down in the area with a quarter of an hour gone. Athletic Bilbao are fifth after they beat neighbours Osasuna 1-2, Kodro getting the winner after Chimy Ávila cancelled out an early Williams strike. And Getafe are still seventh after a 1-1 draw at Espanyol in the early kick-off, Wu Lei saving a point for the hosts after Mata had opened the scoring in the third minute. The Catalans drop further down into the relegation zone though after the team above them, Celta, won 1-3 at Villarreal, Iago Aspas scoring twice late on to give new coach Oscar García his first win. They are now just three points below Eibar, who lost 0-2 against regional rivals Alavés thanks to two late goals from Joselu. (24.11.19)

Barcelona and Real Madrid are starting to open up a gap over the rest, although both suffered before winning their respective matches on Saturday. Barcelona came from behind to beat bottom club Leganés 1-2 in the early kick-off, En-Nesyri putting the hosts in front early on, but Luis Suárez heading in a Messi free kick after the restart, and Arturo Vidal getting the winner with ten minutes to go. Later in the day Real Madrid also went behind to Real Sociedad after Willian José intercepted a bad Sergio Ramos back pass in the second minute, but Modric set up Benzema and Valverde either side of the break to turn things around, and then volleyed home the third after Benzema headed back a cross from substitute Bale, who was booed by the crowd throughout after his famous flag incident while playing for Wales. Atlético Madrid are now three points below the leaders though after they could only draw 1-1 at Granada, Lodi firing them into the lead on the hour mark, but Germán heading the equaliser from a corner a few minutes later. And Valencia also lost ground on the teams above them after they were beaten 2-1 at Betis, Canales getting the winner for the Andalusians with an injury time free kick after a strike by Joaquín had cancelled out Maxi Gómez’s opener. The Ches drop below city rivals Levante after they beat Mallorca 2-1 in the Friday night game, Roger giving the locals the lead, and Rochina tying up the three points after Dani Rodríguez had levelled it for the islanders.
