First division – day 21

Real Madrid are now three points clear of Barcelona at the top of the table after a 0-1 victory at Valladolid on Sunday. Casemiro had a strike ruled out for offside, and Madrid dominated for much of the match, but it was not until a quarter of an hour from the end that Nacho headed the only goal from a Kroos corner. Atlético Madrid are out of the Champions League spots though after they were held to a 0-0 draw by neighbours Leganés in the early kick-off, another disappointing result after their surprise elimination from the cup midweek, and Getafe move above them to fourth after they beat Betis 1-0, Angel getting a controversial last minute winner from the penalty spot after Alex Moreno was adjudged to have handled in the area. And Real Sociedad are back in the European spots as well after a 3-0 win over Mallorca, Isak starting things off for the San Sebastian based side soon after the restart, and Gámez putting through his own net before Portu rounded things off near the end. Elsewhere Celta and Eibar drew 0-0, the result leaving the Galicians still down in the relegation zone, a point behind Mallorca. (26.01.20)

Leaders Barcelona were beaten 2-0 by Valencia on Saturday afternoon, and Quique Setién’s side could be off top spot if Real Madrid pick up a point at Valladolid on Sunday. Ter Stegen saved an early Maxi Gómez penalty after Piqué brought down Gayà in the area, but Jordi Alba deflected Maxi’s shot into his own net at the start of the second half, and the Uruguayan striker made it two after Ferran set him up a few minutes later. The win takes the Ches up to fifth, and Sevilla are now third after a 2-0 victory over neighbours Granada later in the evening. Both goals came in the first half, De Jong heading in a Navas cross, and Nolito latching on to Reguilón’s pass to score the second. Athletic Bilbao are down to eighth after a 1-1 draw at Espanyol, Raúl De Tomás saving a point for the locals after Villalibre had given the Basque team the lead, and they drop below Villarreal on goal difference after they beat Alavés 1-2, youngster Fer Niño getting a last minute winner after Joselu cancelled out Bacca’s opener. And on Friday Osasuna won 2-0 against Levante thanks to a late penalty from Rubén García and a strike from Iñigo Pérez to move above their opponents in the table. (25.01.20)
