First division – day 22

Barcelona stay three points behind leaders Real Madrid after they beat Levante 2-1 on Sunday evening. Ansu Fati got both goals within a two minute period around the half hour mark, both from Messi assists, but Ter Stegen had to make some key saves after that, and an injury time strike by Rochina set up a tight finish in the end. Getafe are now third after a 0-2 victory at Athletic Bilbao earlier in the day, an individualist goal by Damián Suárez and a Mata penalty taking them above Sevilla, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Alavés. In the end though the Andalusians were happy with that after Joselu put the visitors in front with twenty minutes to go, Ocampos saving a point with a late penalty after Duarte handled in the area. Real Sociedad drop to eighth after they lost 2-1 at Leganés, Isak’s opener overturned by an Omerou strike and an Oscar free kick which took Javier Aguirre’s side to the brink of safety. And Villarreal move above the Basques to seventh thanks to a 3-1 victory over Osasuna, new signing Alcácer starting things off, and Rubén Peña and Cazorla (from the penalty spot) wrapping things up after Aridane had equalised. Elsewhere Eibar and Betis drew 1-1, Orellana’s penalty cancelling out Fekir’s opener to leave both teams in the bottom half of the table. (02.02.20)

Real Madrid beat city rivals Atlético Madrid 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to move six points clear of Barcelona pending their game on Sunday. Benzema got the only goal from a Vinicius cross some ten minutes in to the second half to tie up the three points, although Atleti felt they should have had a penalty earlier on after Casemiro brought down Morata in the area. Simeone’s side drop to sixth, below Valencia after the Ches won 1-0 against Celta in the last match of the evening, Soler firing home the only goal after Rodrigo set him up with a quarter of an hour to go. The Galicians remain in the relegation zone as a result, still a point below Mallorca, who lost 0-1 to Valladolid (Enes Ünal the scorer there), and two above Espanyol, who were beaten 2-1 by Granada. Raúl De Tomás gave the Catalans the lead from the penalty spot, but strikes either side of the break by Machís and Carlos Fernández turned the scoreline around. (01.02.20)
