First division – day 29

Real Madrid responded to Barcelona’s victory with a 3-0 win of their own against Valencia on Thursday. Rodrigo hit the post and had a strike ruled out for offside by the VAR early on, but after the restart Benzema combined with Modric and Hazard to open the scoring. Marco Asensio came on for his first appearance in 11 months and volleyed in the second within less than a minute, and Benzema wrapped things up near the end from Asensio’s assist. Madrid stay two points below Barça, but Real Sociedad drop out of the Champions League spots after they lost 2-0 at neighbours Alavés earlier in the evening. Borja Sanz and Martín got the goals in the second half to take their side safely up to mid-table. (18.06.20)

Atlético Madrid are back up into the Champions League places after a convincing 0-5 win at Osasuna on Wednesday. Joao Felix returned to the side to score the first two from Lodi and Diego Costa assists, and substitutes Llorente, Morata and Carrasco added three more in the last quarter of an hour or so. The other two games on Wednesday ended all square, Valladolid and Celta drawing 0-0, thanks in part to a late penalty save by Masip from Iago Aspas, and neighbours Eibar and Athletic Bilbao drew 2-2, a result which took the visitors up to tenth, and left their hosts just a point above Celta, only three clear of the relegation spots. Raúl García put Athletic in front from the penalty spot early on, but a Kike García header and an Orellana penalty turned the scoreline around before Villalibre levelled it with ten minutes to go. Leaders Barcelona put the pressure back on Real Madrid with a 2-0 victory over struggling Leganés on Tuesday night. Ansu Fati got the opener with a shot from the edge of the area on the stroke of half time, and Griezmann had a strike ruled out by VAR before Messi wrapped things up from the penalty spot after Rubén Pérez brought him down in the area. Leganés are now bottom after Espanyol drew 0-0 at sixth placed Getafe, visiting keeper Diego López saving the day after the Catalans had Bernardo sent off with only a quarter of an hour gone. And Mallorca stay down in the bottom three as well after losing 1-0 at Villarreal, Bacca turning in Chukwueze’s cross with fifteen minutes on the clock to take his side up to seventh. (16.06.20)

The intense programme continued into Monday, with third placed Sevilla held to a 1-1 draw by Levante in La Nucía, the town in Alicante where the Valencia based team have decided to play their remaining games. De Jong turned in a Munir cross to give the away side the lead just seconds after the restart, but with three minutes to go Diego Carlos deflected the ball into his own net after Vaclik pushed out Miramón’s cross. Later in the evening Sevilla’s city rivals Betis also drew 2-2 with regional neighbours Granada, who are now just two points off the European spots. Carlos Fernández opened the scoring for the visitors on the half hour mark, and although a Canales penalty and Tello strike turned the scoreline around late on, Soldado saved a point for the visitors following an injury time corner.
