Spain will be taking part in the Olympic Games football competition for the first time since Sydney 2000, and coach Luis Milla took advantage of the international break to organise a warm up match against another of the Olympic sides, Egypt. His squad was weakened though by first team call-ups for Javi Martínez, Mata, Thiago and Muniain, and by injuries to De Gea, Isco and at the last minute Adrián, and a suprisingly strong North African side took the lead near the end of the first half when Mohsen headed past Diego Mariño following a set piece corner. Half time substitute Tello set up Alvaro Vázquez however for him to head the equaliser soon after the restart, and a Koke penalty and a last minute strike again by Vázquez gave Spain the win in the end.
