At a time when small companies would give their eye teeth for some help from local banks, the ex president has already tied up the required aval of €57.3 million euros from the Barcelona based savings bank La Caixa. Barcelona's recent successes are apparently costing them money. A victory in the "Copa de Rey" could cost them more in bonus payments than in takings, and the intense programme of games in three competitions means they are not able to play more lucrative friendly matches. Murcia are the sixth club in the second division to file for protection from creditors under the Spanish "ley concursal", following in the footsteps of Las Palmas, Alavés, Levante, Real Sociedad and Celta. The East coast club have registered debts of around €50 million, and caretaker president Juan Guillamón resigned a couple of weeks ago, just seven weeks after stepping in after maximum shareholder Jesús Samper called it a day. Espanyol have asked their banks to extend a €50 million syndicated loan to 25 years to help them through the current crisis. Delays and additional costs in the construction of their new stadium, redundancy payments to the two managers plus assistants who were fired, and transfer fees for a new striker have left their treasury dry. Valencia's woes continue, and they may have to file for protection from creditors after local banks turned down a request for an additional loan of €100 million. The club owes some €15 million in players wages and salaries, and the new stadium (originally scheduled to open this summer) is already suffering a delay of nine months, partly as term payments have not been met. At the same time the club are reportedly having problems selling plots of land where the old stadium is situated. (13.02.09)
Girona have begun the process of converting to a sporting limited company (SAD), as required by league rules for newly promoted clubs within a year of making it up to the second division A. The annual general meeting approved a capital issue of €4 million, with shares of €500 each at first being offered to season ticket holders before being thrown open to the public. (12.02.09)
Real Madrid are still the richest club in the world, at least according to the latest Deloittes rankings. Helped by a strong Euro, the club have been valued at £289.6 million, some £32.5 million higher than Manchester United. CD Logroñes, a side which only a few seasons ago were in the first division, have been thrown out of the regional third division after the few remaining players refused to turn up to a match for the second week in a row. After the failed takeover by British businessman Paul Davidson, Mallorca's majority shareholder Vicente Grande has decided to hand back the presidency of the club to Mateo Alemany. Only Eibar will spend less than the Soria based side's €4 million, and with an average ground attendance of one out of five of the town's entire population, they are forecasting a profit of €1.75 million this year.
