Real Sociedad celebrated their return to the top flight after a three year absence with a 1-0 victory over Villarreal. The Basque side lined up with seven home-grown players, and they had the better of the game without really creating any clear cut chances early on. Only Rossi was causing any problems at the other end though, and after the restart Llorente, Zurutuza and Sutil all tried their luck.

With just under an hour gone, birthday boy Xabi Prieto picked up a back-heel pass from Llorente to drill a low shot past Diego López for what was to prove the only goal of the game. Garrido belatedly brought on all his fire power after that, and Nilmar in particular almost saved a point when he shot just wide in the dying minutes. That would probably have been unfair though, and Real have sent out a message that they are here to stay.
